🌳 Kelly's Farm Community Update 🌳
To our friends, neighbors, and supporters.
First, I want to apologize for not providing more frequent updates on the changes taking place at Kelly's Farm. We understand that many people care deeply about this property, and when you see things changing without explanation, it's natural to have questions and concerns.
The reality is that we have a tremendous amount of work ahead of us to restore, improve, and secure the long-term future of the farm. Some of the changes happening today may not immediately make sense from the outside, but please know that every decision is being made with the farm's long-term success in mind.
Everything being done at the farm is being overseen by Tim Perry, whose knowledge of the property, its history, and its agricultural operations has been invaluable as we move forward.
Like many long-established orchards, some portions of the farm have reached a point where significant maintenance and reinvestment are necessary. For example, the peach trees at the corner of Academy Road and Weiss Avenue are well beyond their most productive years, as a result those trees will be removed and replaced with new plantings. This process will take several years, but it is an important step in maintaining a healthy and productive orchard for future generations.
Many people have also expressed concerns about the blueberry bushes that were recently removed. We understand those bushes held special memories for many families. Our original hope was to transplant them, but unfortunately they had grown too large and mature to make relocation practical or successful. If transplanting had been a realistic option, we absolutely would have done it.
In fact, our plans are to expand our pick-your-own blueberry operation near the corner of Academy Road. We also intend to grow additional crops in areas that will help strengthen the farm's future and diversify agricultural production.
As we continue investing in the farm, there will be other visible changes. We need parking to accommodate visitors, storage for the farm equipment we have invested in, a replacement for the aging farm store, and an event venue that will help generate the revenue needed to keep the farm operating for generations to come.
Accomplishing these goals will require the removal of some trees and plantings. However, what may not be obvious today is that we also plan to plant significant numbers of new trees and crops throughout the property. In fact, our goal is to plant more productive agricultural acreage than we remove, utilizing areas that are currently vacant or underutilized.
We know some of these changes can be difficult to watch in the short term. We hear your concerns, we understand your questions, and we respect the passion people have for this farm. We simply ask for your patience as the work continues.
Kelly's Farm has been permanently protected from development, and our commitment is to ensure it remains a thriving working farm, not just for today, but for future generations. Every project, every planting, and every investment is being made with that goal in mind.
Please bear with us through the process and judge us by the final result rather than the temporary disruptions along the way.
