Before packing up 6 dozen- had some fun šŸ˜‰ James Galway rose & feverfew- a whole lot of olive eggers in different greens, pinky creams from bresse, blues from ameracaunas, speckled welsummers, and darker brown maran mixes & speckles.

Yup- We lost 50% of our peony crop this year. The multiple freezes at crucial bud forming times nipped over half of our varieties, causing bud abortion- a tiny shriveled brown bud instead of a flower. Thankfully we harvested just enough stems from over 4000 plants to fulfill our commitments, but we lost tens of thousands of dollars of revenue.

You might never know this from my stories. People said ā€˜well the blooms look stunning this year!’. It’s a reminder that what looks beautiful on the surface doesn’t always tell the whole story. Behind every lush bouquet, every gorgeous field photo, and every fluffy bloom I share is another season of risks, setbacks, and hard lessons.

This year brought challenges - something we have learned to expect in our last 12 years of farming- every year we joke it’s ā€˜something’ , but it also reminded us why we keep growing and moving forward. Agriculture is forever humbling, and sometimes resilience and perseverance is the biggest harvest of all. As a Scorpio- I love a challenge. Thanks for sticking with usšŸ˜šŸ˜

Your future self will thank you. 🌸

Did you know peonies can take up to 3 years to mature enough for those big, abundant harvests we all dream about? That’s why the best time to plant them is sooner rather than later.

The good news? Getting started is easier than you think.

We’ve done the hard part for you with our healthy peony roots and simple planting instructions to guide you. Peonies aren’t fussy about soil- ours thrive with little care compared to other flowers. Plant this fall, and you’ll be on your way to years of beautiful blooms, armfuls of flowers, and a garden you’ll love more each season.

🌿 Plant this year & soon enough, you’ll be cutting an abundance of peonies from your garden. Preorder roots for fall shipping and get started growing the garden you’ve been dreaming about.

Finally got a ā€˜purple’ egg- which is really just a very dark brown egg with a heavy cloudy bloom over it to make it look purple. Once it’s scrubbed clean, the egg will be a very dark brown. Now to figure out who’s laying it! This is the fun part of hatching all those eggs from small breeders over the last year - seeing what you get!

Flower lovers — this is your sign 🌸

Preorders are officially open for next season’s peonies, ranunculus, and anemones! Our most-loved varieties tend to sell quickly, so this is the best way to reserve your flowers early and be first in line for next year’s blooms. Peonies in particular take a few years to establish, so the sooner you get a root in the ground- the sooner you get blooms!

Whether you’re dreaming of harvesting armfuls of peonies, delicate ranunculus, or the first anemones of spring, now’s the time to plan ahead for your garden to shine.

Limited quantities available for the 2027 season — reserve early for the best selection ✨

… and just like that, peony season has begun🄰🄰

When I first started farming here in PA and learning about how to grow peonies (I couldn’t grow them well in our area of CA) - I was obsessed with having our OWN peonies for Mother’s Day and not having to order them in for customers bouquets. That meant getting them to bloom earlier than ā€˜typical’ timing.

It was then that I learned about the different peony varieties and timing (early, mid, late)- which is how you get a longer time for bloom. This is part of what we teach in our own on-farm peony workshops as well to home growers.

Pictured here are our earliest varieties of peonies. These used to bloom the first week of May- and now the last couple years always bloom the last week or two of April. It will be a fast & furious 5-6 weeks from here until end of bloom season. It is one of my absolute favorites!!

Thanks American Grown Flowers šŸ’

The USDA recently announced a $1 billion Assistance for Specialty Crop Farmers (ASCF) program to support farmers facing market disruptions, rising input costs, inflation, and losses from unfair foreign trade practices.

But there’s a problem.

Floriculture and horticulture — including cut flowers, foliage and potted plants — were excluded from the program.

For more than two decades, federal statute has recognized floriculture and nursery crops as specialty crops. Yet the current ASCF program relied on outdated definitions that do not include our sector.

That means America’s flower and foliage farmers were left out of critical support.

🌸 What American Grown Flowers is doing

American Grown Flowers is actively advocating for our industry. Today we are meeting with USDA leadership alongside the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance Legislative Committee to raise concerns and seek clarity on this program.

Key issues we are addressing:

• Floriculture and horticulture crops must be included in the list of eligible commodities
• Commodity-specific price-per-acre payment structures do not work for flower and foliage crops
• Acreage reporting requirements do not reflect how many flower farms operate
• Funding levels remain insufficient to support specialty crop producers

America’s flower farmers are part of the specialty crop economy and deserve to be recognized and supported accordingly.

We will continue to keep our community informed as advocacy efforts move forward.

🌸 Supporting American flower farmers means ensuring their voices are heard.
