We took two handsome boys to their new home today at the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange NJ. They will stay in this beautiful clean stall for a few weeks and then move to their exhibit space. We’ll take 2 more boys up there by the end of the year. Ripple was so filthy but he’ll be fresh as a daisy once he dries out. We’re excited for their new adventures and look forward to updates as they settle in. The staff has been great to work with. We’ll miss you guys. 😘 😘

Farewell Perú!!🇵🇪 Thank you for so many great experiences. Wade Gease you sure know how to host a group of crazy tourists. Thanks for keeping us on track and in line.
I’m excited to get back home and meet our new cria Sugar Magnolia, and love on her mama Sunspot. And extra special love and hugs for Merengue who was discharged from New Bolton Center yesterday. Thanks to adriennejp5783 and Chris for making the trip down to get her.
It’s been a wild two weeks. I’m coming home refreshed and eager to kick off all things autumn. Inspired. Grateful.

Yesterday was a super long travel day but so worth the remote bumpy roads, tire change, dust and low cell phone battery.
We visited a ranch outside of Puno. The family was eager to meet us and share their champion winning alpacas with us. What a thrill. They have 1200 alpacas! We got a close up view of the altiplano that stretches out all along the mountain floor. Alpacas don’t need lush grass to forage. These animals graze on dried grasses that look like old straw. Water is limited in the dry season. But the fiber…. ooh la la. Long and dense. Bright and low micron. Amazing crimp. A worthwhile trip indeed. Today we’re back in Lima.

Today was a free day. I wandered into San Pedro market. Met up with my cooking class mates. Got more insight into Incan food and preservation methods. In Dael’s studio we prepared a passion fruit pisco sour, 3 kinds of trout ceviche, a potato dish, stuffed peppers with veggies, and then some gnocchi made with a starchy fruit and amaranth flour. The adventures continue today as we head back to Lima and then Puno. Going up in elevation today - 12,000 ft.

Being away from the farm on vacation, has its highs and lows. Soon after I left, we lost our sweet barn cat sad😢 Gus Gus. He served his chicken buddies faithfully. He often curled up in the coop with them at night and kept watch over them during the day. He will be missed. 💔

Merengue who was full term went into labor but wasn’t progressing. She was taken to New Bolton Center for a c-section. Sadly her baby did not make it. Merengue is doing well. 🙏🏻 for a full recovery ❤️‍🩹

Yesterday, sunspot decided to deliver her cria. I got to witness the entire birth and first milestones via FaceTime. Please welcome Sugar Magnolia to the herd. She was 19 pounds, strong, smart and healthy.

I couldn’t do it without great helpers who go above and beyond your average pet sitting duties. Im grateful beyond words for their help. I’m also grateful to be traveling with an amazing group of alpaca owners from the US, Germany and Canada. They totally understand the ups and downs of farming and how hard it is to be away from your herd in times like this.

What a whirlwind!!! Lots of tipsy trains, bumpy busses, planes a plenty, elevation extremes, but we are getting to see so much of this beautiful country. Traveling with a fantastic group of alpaca people makes it extra special.
