Friend of The Preserve, Patrick Springer has just published a book we want to share about the history of our beloved Nokotas: Untamed: The Story of the Wild Horses of Theodore Roosevelt National Park

"A story of survival and a continued fight for freedom, Untamed gallops through history and shows the importance of these fierce, wild herds that still roam the prairies today. Whether you are a history-buff, horse-lover or just someone searching for the spirit of independence, this book is for you."

Grab your copy today!:

The story of the horses of Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a tale of survival. These magnificent animals have adapted to thrive in the Badlands' harsh environment, enduring searing summers and frigid winters, and defying decades of determined efforts by park officials and others to remove them.....

There’s an old piece of folklore that says mysterious knots or tangles found in a horse’s mane were never made by wind or brush, but by the fairies themselves.

Legend says that when a child leaves this earth, Heaven weeps. The angels’ tears fall so softly and heavily that a great mist covers the path home, making it hard to guide the child’s soul through the clouds. So the fairies step in to help.

Small but full of magic, they cannot make the journey alone. Under moonlight, while the world sleeps, they slip quietly into the fields and borrow the horses of the earth. Into their manes they weave tiny braids and hidden knots, creating enchanted reins for the ride.

By dawn, the horses are returned to their pastures, a little wild-haired, a little sleepy, and carrying traces of where they’ve been.

So if you ever find a tangled knot in your horse’s mane, perhaps it wasn’t neglect at all… perhaps they were needed elsewhere in the night. ✨🐴

We are SO excited to share this… The Nokota Preserve has an official logo!

This logo embodies the gesture that the Nokota merge as individuals to become one herd through the heart. We pay homage to the Lakota with the suggestive medicine wheel, the prairie grass to represent their homeland in North Dakota and the more primitive style of the background that reflects movement and energy. It feels like an organic connection to nature emphasizing unity and heart led wisdom.

So much thanks to for her talent in bringing this to life and her shared deep
love of conscious horsemanship.

We can’t wait to hear what you think!

A story from Alexandria Skaggs and her beautiful Nokota mare, Willow.

“I had a Nokota named Willow who I got when I was about 12 because I’ve always dreamed about having a horse and worked my way through detasseling so I could finally get one. I looked for a long time and found her online and fell in love. I always wanted to overcome my fear and compete in 4h with a horse and so together we did. But then she passed away about 7 years of having her due to colic and we couldn’t figure out why💔. One of the saddest days in my life, I couldn’t look at another horse for so long.”

Thank-you Alexandria for sharing your story with us!
