Brooks Milgate’s B3 Groove Residency — Soul Jazz in Full Flight

Thursday night at Meadow Blues, the room caught fire when Brooks Milgate, Chris Vitarello, and Liviu Pop hit the stage and locked into that deep pocket of funk, blues, soul, and jazz.

Brooks Milgate owns that Hammond B3. The man doesn’t just play keys — he commands them. That rich, gritty tone, the way he walks the bass lines so convincingly you find yourself looking around for a bass player that isn’t there… that’s mastery. And when Brooks leans into the soul of a song and makes that Hammond growl, moan, and testify, that’s the nitty gritty of soul jazz at its finest.

Chris Vitarello the kind of guitarist who can step into any musical space and make it his own. Fearless, fluid, and dripping with soul. His take on Start It Up by Robben Ford was electrifying — sultry, soulful, full of grit and fire. The phrasing, the touch, the improvisation… the kind of playing that raises the hair on your arms and makes you stop everything just to listen.

And then there’s Liviu Pop — first time at Meadow Blues, but the second he walked in, you knew he was carrying thunder. Behind the kit, Liviu brought power, swagger, and deep groove. His shuffle had its own dance, his sticks speaking a language all their own. He didn’t just keep time — he shaped the pulse of the room, pushing and pulling the band like a locomotive on soul rails.

Together, these three created something special — a masterclass in groove, chemistry, and soul.

This Thursday, Brooks Milgate returns to Meadow Blues with another chapter of his Soul Jazz Summer Residency — a series built around the deep, soulful pulse of the Hammond B3 and the magic that happens when world-class musicians stretch out and let the music breathe.

Joining Brooks this week is Chris Vitarello on guitar — a Connecticut Blues Hall of Famer whose playing blends blues grit with jazz sophistication. Chris is known for his fearless improvisation, sharp phrasing, and jaw-dropping virtuosity. Having shared the stage with legendary soul-jazz organ master Jimmy McGriff, Chris brings that authentic organ-trio fire — the kind of guitar work that can whisper, wail, and soar all in the same song.

Holding down the rhythm is Liviu Pop on drums — also a Connecticut Blues Hall of Famer — whose dynamic style and deep pocket have powered performances with giants like Bobby Rush, Popa Chubby, and Hubert Sumlin. Liviu doesn’t just keep time — he drives the conversation, pushing the band into those spontaneous moments Soul Jazz fans live for.

I’m still riding the wave from last night’s performance by the Chris O’Leary Band at Meadow Blues. What they brought into that room wasn’t just music — it was pure electricity, soul, and enough energy to power Chester for a week.

Chris O’Leary is the kind of storyteller who can stop a room cold. One minute you could hear a pin drop as he pulls you into his world, and the next he’s hitting you with an original song that takes you even deeper — heart first, no seatbelt.

And then… something happened.

The music gods clearly grabbed hold of Pat, because that guitar went from six strings to full-blown testimony. He wasn’t playing to us anymore — he was screaming straight to the heavens, and the heavens were answering back.

Then out comes Sheila, cool as can be, singing go on down to Jackson, play your hand you big-talkin’ man — and let me tell you, she OWNED it. She knew the crowd was right there with her, and she absolutely nailed it.

Andy? Holding onto that sax like it owed him money… but instead of blowing it, he’s singing! That’s the thing with this band — you never know what’s coming next, and that’s half the magic.

Chris and Dave kept us locked in with harmonica and keys that wouldn’t let your hips stand still, while Chuck — the heartbeat of it all — laid down that groove so deep and steady it felt like the floorboards were breathing.

By the end of the night, we were all musically exhausted… the good kind. The kind where you wake up the next morning still hearing the songs in your head and wondering if your soul got stretched a little bigger.

Chris… get back here soon. Meadow Blues isn’t done with you yet.

Last night, John Pierre Conques and his band took the stage and brought Meadow Blues straight into Southern Rock country. Raised on his father’s well-worn Capricorn Records collection, JP delivered the fiery, soulful sound that shaped him — and the band was right there with him every step of the way.

Together with Pete Francovilla on keys, Frank Johns on bass, and Andrei Koribanics on drums, they did a killer job covering all those songs we know by heart — the kind that had the whole room singing along like it was 1975 again.

What happens when you melt soul, blues, jazz, and funk into one night? You get Soul Jazz — and Thursday night at Meadow Blues, Brooks on Hammond B3, Matt on drums, and Pete on guitar took it somewhere special.

The chemistry was undeniable — the smiles, the nods, the laughter, the unspoken conversation between musicians… it was contagious.

I was told these guys were top-notch. After hearing them, the question became: How do you top that? My answer? That’s on Brooks. 😉

What makes it even better? It was the first time Brooks and Pete had ever played together. You’d never know it — they sounded like they’d been locking in for years.

And for anyone who hears “jazz” and thinks elevator music… not even close. This is grit, groove, soul, and fire. No elevators here — unless you count how high the music lifts you.
