Don't let her fool you. She had already finished hers. She's just being a bit dramatic.

If "OMG! I love this weather!" had a face... also, if she doesn't make eye contact she doesn't have to listen to me. That's a rule, apparently.

So, it has been a new year, but the same old. Such is farm life!

We had three momma goats kid in two days over New Year's. One did great, one didn't drop milk, and one died. So, here we are. Kids are doing GREAT, and my garage smells like baby goats, but damn. They're so flipping cute. My heart is still broken over momma, but I'm trying to focus on the good.

The babies are healthy.
The babies are growing.
The babies are running my life. lol

Tornados suck.

No pun intended.

Even though we were very lucky and the livestock and buildings were left pretty much unscathed we are gonna be in firewood for YEARS.

We made it through the tornado mostly unscathed. We lost some beautiful old trees, and a hay tarp blew off, but the animals are all okay! Thats the main thing.

Found him. Finally.

Calves are hide and seek LEGENDS. Ugh. We switched pastures yesterday and though I found him and moved him then I really wanted to make sure he was doing okay. Being born and manhandled on the same day can be rough.

I needn't have worried though; 4 knew right where he was. I actually used her level of concern to hone in on him! He was hidden very well on the wrong side of the fence...

Thank God for good neighbors.

Before bed last night I checked the forecast and they were calling for a little less than an inch of rain, which meant I wasn't worried about the bottom pasture flooding...

Yeah. A guy on fb said we got at least 3.5"...

So one neighbor called us at 5 am told us the road was flooded closed and the cows were all up close to the fence. So, it is better than the last time that we got caught off guard with the cows in the back corner, but even without "swim herding" being a factor it was a damned stressful morning. But thank goodness the neighbors called because we got everyone moved and accounted for pretty easily and I was able to wade out and save the solar charger and a gigantic preying mantis that apparently hitched a ride out of the flood zone in my hair. Fun times.

Then another awesome neighbor texted and asked if we needed them to check on or move the cows for us. We are so, so blessed.

Our Story

V-Y is a natural progression. I grew up around cows. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of climbing up on top of the round bales and singing my little heart out to the herd.

Naturally they were captivated. It had nothing to do with me using their food as a stage, surely.

As I grew up I came to understand that the way my parents managed their herd was unique for the area. We never fed grain or had a need for vaccines and antibiotics. When I inherited my grandpa’s farm I knew that I wanted to follow the same regimen, and that I really wanted to move the beautiful rolling hills out of row crop and into a perennial grass mix to help rebuild the soil and combat erosion.

You see, not all cattle operations impact the environment negatively and I am passionate about being one of the good ones. Our pastures and hay fields not only sequester carbon, but also provide habitat for local fauna and insects. Added benefits? No more mass spraying of insecticides and herbicides.
