This really shows how messy quail are, but also the difference in size that just a few days can make! These babies are all within less than two weeks of each other. They grow so fast! ♥️

I brood on towels until they’re old enough to be on shavings. It’s just what works for me.

My husband didn’t move one of his cars for a few days during the rain and this was the result. Our grass jumped a few inches in three days and all of the wild areas are out of control, but the garden beds are thriving and I’m not having to water twice a day to keep things alive.

Nature is such an amazing thing, but it does provide challenges. I think we’ve all become so used to modern conveniences that it is really jarring when we have things like water restrictions (for those on public water), grocery store supply chain issues/shortages (like we dealt with a few years ago during Covid restrictions), and that doesn’t even touch on limitations caused by natural disasters. We don’t have to immediately jump to being absolutely self sufficient, but we all should be doing things to prep for hardships.

Being prepared helps to keep us calm when troubles come. Start where you are, do what you can, and work towards a plan.

My little Arkansas Black apple tree is quite loaded this year. I should probably thin some of them, even though we should be past the stage it’s necessary, but I’m not going to. I do need to pump some serious fertilizer to this thing this year to get it growing more! It was planted at the same time and at the same age as my other apple trees, but started out smaller and hasn’t made much progress in catching up.

A big focus for me the last few years is to get more food growing that doesn’t require constant effort on my part. I’ve planted apple, plum, and pear trees, added to the fig bush collection, and this year I added some new grapes and raspberries. I planted blueberries a few years ago that I’ve neglected, apparently even occasional effort isn’t my strong suit, and at least a couple of those are still growing. I hope to continue to expand my herb garden, especially perennial herbs, and to do more skincare and medicinal things with them.

I post this not to say “look at me” but rather to remind people that we all start somewhere and sometimes we start somewhere over and over, and that’s OKAY!

These ducks will find a hiding spot anywhere, but they don’t have to look hard right now. The rain has brought everything to life and there’s so much that I need to cut back! Now that it’s raining I can use the torch, but I’ve been too nervous for that with the drought.

They like to fill the feeder base with shavings. Messy creatures! I’ll be lowering the black feeder you see in the background so they can use it without slinging shavings up into it. This is the feeder hanging back there. https://a.co/d/09CcDfbm
The shavings that are in the pen now will be dumped into the pathways in my garden and my Grandma flock will clean all the spilled feed out of it, and uproot grass in the paths while they’re doing so. It’s a win-win! Work smarter, not harder.

Fred is the low man on the pole so he’s always looking for special treats he doesn’t have to share with Grady. ♥️

I needed to get my pennyroyal in the ground, it was quite root bound and struggling, but it will not be staying with this Korean mint. I’m creating a bed for poisonous/semi toxic plants and I’ll be moving this there to live with the belladonna. I’m not sure I currently have other known toxic plants, but I’m always adding. 🤪

No rodent activity overnight. 🤞🏽this is enough of a deterrent until they get a little bigger. I prefer not to stake them down but I will if I see any signs of digging.

I’m in hopes I’ll get at least one green egg layer in these. I don’t obsess about egg colors, their olive egger/easter egger cross sister lays a pink egg, but I do enjoy some variety. Until then, I appreciate their pest control efforts.

Do you use chickens for pest control in your garden?
