Officials are warning horse owners about an ongoing outbreak of equine herpesvirus after horses across multiple southern states have tested positive following two rodeo events earlier this month.

Many of you are aware that there is an Equine Herpes Virus scare in Texas and horses from a large event are returning home, often traveling across several states. I have managed not 1, but 2, "outbreaks" that we were able to contain on the farm and I learned a lot from both instances. However, the most important thing, not just in EHV but in all disease processes, is have common sense.

For EHV:
- If your horse is being vaccinated twice a year with me, you are receiving the recommended vaccination protocol.
- If you travel, bring your own hose or water, do not allow your horse to graze on public grass, do not pet other people's horses or allow horses to touch noses.
- If you do go to a group event or get a new horse, isolate for 2 weeks and make sure that horse is adequately vaccinated.
