The sunflower fields are blooming and we are so excited for them!

They will peak bloom this coming weekend.

So come drive by them soon and hopefully they will bring you as much joy as my Grandpa got out of them today.

Thanks Marcia Buntz for the pictures ❤️

Planting is in full swing here at Havin Hills Rolling Acres! Logan actually has the majority of our acres planted and is working on some custom planting now.

The field that he is planting in the video is our Nitrogen Optimization pilot program (NOPP) plot. Here we are applying different amounts of nitrogen (fertilizer) on the different passes he is taking. Going from 0 pounds of nitrogen up to 200 pounds of nitrogen. We are taking different data during the year and through harvest to see if this data can tell us if we can optimize nitrogen or fertilizer use on fields.

Logan, our agronomist, and another local farmer are doing some cool things this spring to try and understand nitrogen better in our fields and crops. In hopes of being able to help other farmers understand and use nitrogen more efficiently.

The Nitrogen Optimization Pilot Project (NOPP) is underway! Logan Dwyer, Joe Ailts, Andy Bensend, & his farm manager Josh Schloneger are NOPP grant recipients who will explore organic and inorganic nitrogen soil testing to reduce nitrogen applications.

When asked why he chose to apply for funding to perform on-farm trials, crop consultant Joe Ailts says “Updates to the way we assess and manage nitrogen in corn are long overdue. The NOPP grant has provided the framework, funding, and motivation to determine if and how emerging nitrogen measures can be used to “do nitrogen better”. Producer Andy Bensend adds, “How often do we get to build on our business efficiency while also providing a real way to help our industry be more environmentally sound?”.
