Berglane Farm

Berglane Farm He milks cows and she writes about them. Just a husband and wife team taking on the world together with their herd of registered Holsteins and Jerseys.

A classic Prince Farming and Farming Beauty tale right here! He's a dairy farmer and she's a dairy journalist. We breed for healthy, balanced cows that look good in their work clothes and make milk. Since 1902, Berglane Farm has been home to registered Holsteins and added its first registered Jersey in 2015.

We lost Bud on Monday night after he suffered a second major stroke over the weekend. While we're grateful that he is now with our Lord in heaven, we sure miss him greatly down here. Thank you all for the prayers, love, and support that you've covered us with over the last few weeks.

Love,
The Olson Family
Pat, Sam, Brittany, and Titus

C. Lowell “Bud” Olson, age 78 of Dallas, died January 26, 2026, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire following two major strokes. Bud was born on June 24, 1947, in Amery, WI to Curtiss and Florence (Siebrecht) Olson. Bud and his five younger siblings grew up on a dairy farm near Little Falls where the daily routine of chores and living close to the land set the tone for Bud’s life. Bud graduated from Amery High School in 1965 and was drafted into the Army the following year, eventually being deployed to Vietnam. Upon returning stateside in 1968, he worked for Caterpillar in Peoria, Ill., then Friday Canning Company and trucking and dispatching at Doboy Feeds in New Richmond, all while helping out his dad and brothers at home when he could. In 1978, he came back to the home farm for good - or so he thought. In 1988, a neighbor introduced Bud to a friend of his that just happened to live on a dairy farm in the next county over. Her name was Pat Berg, and her extroverted nature complemented Bud’s shy and unassuming manner well. After striking up a friendship over things in common and their shared Lutheran faith, he married her on her family’s farm a couple of miles east of Dallas on August 12, 1989. Bud and Pat took over her family farm and welcomed their son, Samuel John, on July 31, 1991. Together they built a life milking cows, growing crops, going to church, and raising Sam with the Christian values that they held dear. Sam grew up and married his college sweetheart, Brittany Statz, in 2016, which allowed Bud and Pat to mostly retire from farming. Living on the farm following retirement from milking cows allowed Bud to help out when and where he could on the farm. When Sam and Brittany finally gave Bud and Pat a grandchild in 2022, Bud wholeheartedly embraced being a grandpa to Titus, who he affectionately called P***y. Bud enjoyed farming and living a simple life close to the land, but his real pride and joy was his family. He was a gentle soul, and we will miss his quiet yet steadfast presence in our lives dearly.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Curtiss and Florence Olson; in-laws, Harold and Doris Berg; and brothers-in-law Mike Conlow, Mike Mikla, and Reynold Petersen. He is survived by his wife, Pat Olson; his son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Brittany Olson; grandson, Titus Olson; sisters, Kay Conlow of Surprise, AR,, Barb (Lonnie) Bendixen of Barnes, and Becky Mikla of Hammond; brothers, Craig and Chuck Olson of Amery; sister-in-law, Barbara Petersen of Dallas; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 8 at 1:30 P.M. at Dallas Lutheran Church with Pastor Adam Klefstad presiding, followed by burial at the Dallas Cemetery with full military honors at a later date. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Sunday. Rausch-Lundeen Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements. The family would like to thank the emergency department at Mayo Clinic Health System in Barron and the critical care and neurology units at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire for their care following Bud’s strokes.

Sam's dad, Bud, suffered a major stroke last Monday. He's improving day by day but will likely be in the hospital for a very long time followed by inpatient rehab. We're all just doing the best we can until he comes back home.

The cows are loving the cooler temperatures even more than we are! They've been awfully slow to come into the barn for milking these days. Right now they're still spending about 20-21 hours a day on pasture with some supplemental corn silage, but we expect that to change once the silos are filled and the pastures are done for the year.

Silage is slow going right now and we've had some setbacks. Sam had campylobacter and two types of E. coli a couple of weeks ago, and now his dad is recovering from pneumonia. We are thankful to everyone who has stopped in and offered to help so far. It's going to take a village to get our corn crop off this year.

If you happen to hear "Austin" by Blake Shelton playing on the barn radio, we do not own the rights to that music.

Two weeks ago we said goodbye to our first homebred registered Jersey and first homebred Excellent cow, Berglane Lemonhead Hattie EX-92. She had just had her 7th calf (and 7th daughter at that) and it took too much out of her. She went out to pasture with the rest of the cows the night before, laid down in the tall grass, and drifted off into eternal rest.

We miss her dearly but we are so grateful for all the time we had with her and the legacy she left behind with her many daughters and granddaughters. By next May we'll be milking 4 of her daughters.

Here's to good old cows and greener pastures. 🍻

I always wanted me one that was long and black 🎶

We classified our Holsteins last weekend. While we mostly scored two-year-old cows for their first score, the biggest highlight was our black beauty Berglane Diamondback Friesia adding another point to score Excellent-91! Friesia is about 5 weeks fresh with a beautiful Luxury *RC heifer calf and is looking and feeling great.
