Like everyone else we are knee deep in snow and cold temperatures. As we bundled up in layers to feed cows and complete other farm chores I was reminded of Randy in A Christmas Story with his thick snowsuit that made it difficult to move. Thankfully, insulated clothing has improved over the years!
As I reflect on this past year…..which started off cold, then very wet, then very dry…..the perfect storm for an overwhelming number of weeds that we couldn’t kill….a calf lost to a cougar, a premature calf with a strong will to live, 15 calves born, 11 steers sold….I am left with the following….
I am blessed to have a husband with a backhoe who is not afraid of projects! In previous years our cows and horses watered out of a spring all winter. At times we would need to break ice for them. Last winter we bought an ice fishing drill to get through the ice because it froze so hard. I don’t think it would have worked this winter - too cold for too long. This fall we installed an automatic waterer with heat - completed right before it turned cold. I am thankful every day for the completion of this project!
We are also blessed with great neighbors! Our neighborhood excels at self-sufficiency, AND it is nice to know our neighbors are willing to lend a hand if it is ever needed.
We are also blessed with wonderful friends, family and neighbors who offer advice, rent pasture, rent hay ground, supply hay, haul cattle, help work cattle, buy calves, plow snow, let us know when our cows are out of bounds, and let us know when predators are in the area (seems to be a constant these days).
Finally, thank you to our customers! We appreciate your business, positive feedback and referrals! Of course we could not do this without you!
Best wishes for a WARM Merry Christmas and a peaceful new year,
Michelle & Curt Wasco
