When my granddad came back to Illinois, he didn’t go to Bronzeville—the segregated blocks of Chicago’s South Side where Black families were forced into a few neighborhoods by design.

Instead, he joined family who bought land in Robbins. One of the first independent Black towns in the North.

Because self-determination changes things.
Owning land changes things.
Being able to elect your own leadership changes things.

That’s part of what towns like Robbins represented.

But autonomy without investment is a trap.

You can’t systematically lock people out of wealth, banking, infrastructure, industry, home loans, and opportunity…then wonder why disinvestment leaves scars generations later.

Because none of this happens by accident.

I’ve been thinking about expressing myself and the brand more clearly. And that might look like a curated pastry box drop for the month of June. Stay tuned.

To all the mothers—
especially my mama, grandmamas, aunties, auntie cousins, godmamas, and play aunties 💕🌸

Thank you.
For your strength.
For your beauty.
For your intelligence.
For carrying on.

The perspective I’m gaining researching my family history
is hard to put into words.

I’ve never seen so clearly
that every mother
is also someone’s child.

Who is also someone’s child.

And how what happens to that child,
the good and the bad,
carries on.

Shaping a beautiful new woman,
marked by old wounds,
new ways of being,
and little sprinkles of the old ways
that never really leave us.

A woman who will grow older,
gain wisdom,
and pass it on
to the women who come after.

And after.

And after. 💕

Hear me out

People called them “Black veteran troublemakers.”

Men who came home from war…
educated, disciplined, worldly—
and no longer willing to accept the rules as they were.

My granddad’s story took him from Chicago…
to the United States Navy…
to printing stories at the The Baltimore Afro-American…
to Hampton University…
where he met my grandmother.

And eventually…
brought the whole family back to Chicago.

(1/2) Writing these last few parts of this series has been heavy.
Real heavy.

I was setting up my camera…
and honestly, I started ranting.
(Was gonna delete this.)

Because this story isn’t just content.

It’s about family.
And grief.
And questions nobody asked out loud.

And trying to understand how the people who came before me
built a life…
when the odds were never built for them.

And how all of that…
lives in me.

Some recipes start with ingredients.
Some start with people. 💐

For this Mother’s Day pop-up, I built this month’s cinnamon roll lineup around two women who mean a lot to me:

🥕Carrot Cake — Inspired by my mom-in-law—who I’m pretty sure is convinced carrot cake counts as a healthy choice. (Don’t tell her I said that.) Soft dough layered with warm spices, sweet carrots, toasted walnuts, and finished with tangy cream cheese frosting.

🍫German Chocolate — Inspired by my mama—because when it comes to dessert (and honestly, life), she is a more is more type of person. Rich chocolate, toasted pecans, sweet coconut, and all the chocolately chocolate goodness one person can reasonably handle—rolled up in pillowy dough.

🥛Classic — our signature, because every family needs a classic.

Food has always been one of the ways I say “I love you.” So this month feels extra special. 🫶🏽

So grateful to have shared a bit of my journey this morning with a beautiful group of young women at Visionary Voices in STEAM: Engineering the Future of Sisterhood—alongside these incredible women—representing the culinary arts 🧑🏾‍🍳✨

Becauseeee… from baking ratios and fermentation,
to food costing and induction technology—
STEAM shows up in this business every single day

Honored to be part of this powerful collaboration between National Coalition of 100 Black Women Museum of Science and Industry and Girls in STEM —connecting young women with what’s possible across science, technology, engineering, arts, and math

And thank you to for the connection 🌸🫶🏽
