Some Thai restaurants slowly drift into the same safe, predictable menu. Zaab E Lee isn’t that. You look at the menu and immediately see the street food dishes that don’t always make it onto the average Thai spot’s lineup. The kind of plates that remind you what Thai cooking is actually about.

There’s a bit of Bangkok energy inside too; subtle neon, Thai movie posters, hut-style seating . And in the food, you can taste those defining elements: lemongrass, Thai basil, green chilies, that balance of sweet, sour, and heat that makes the cuisine so dynamic in the first place.

The limited-time Kimchi Short Rib Ramen at Strings Ramen is exactly what I needed. Think falling-off-the-bone beef, a rich broth, and the surprise of a melty mozzarella pull. We paired it with their Spicy Crab Yakisoba, loaded with fresh crab, and their signature Stringsria mocktails. If you’re in the Chicagoland area, consider this your sign to visit before the season changes.

Big thanks to the team at Strings for the invite to taste the new offerings.

Got hosted at Molly Tea in Chinatown and this spot is all about premium jasmine tea straight from China — not your typical boba stop. The drinks are lighter, more tea-forward, and layered with creamy foams and unique toppings. I’ve been seeing them pop up all over the East & West Coast, so I had to see what the hype was about. Definitely a different lane from the usual bubble tea vibe.

Have you tried Molly Tea yet?

I stopped by Gumrai Thai in Arlington Heights during happy hour and I’m not gonna lie… I got a little nervous at first. The chicken satay was okay, potstickers were just fine, and the tom yum soup was super basic — mostly broth with a couple mushrooms. At that point I was thinking, uh-oh.

But then the entrees came out and flipped everything. The basil chicken had a deep umami-forward savory heat with a good mix of veggies, and the Pad Ped chicken with eggplant had this slightly smoky, sweet-spice flavor that really stood out.
The space was calm, but there was a steady flow of pickup orders the whole time — feels like a go-to takeout spot.

One of those Chinatown spots that always feels worth the wait. QXY is dumplings first, everything else second — made fresh and meant to be shared.

Quick tips: put your name down, then walk around Chinatown until you get the text that your table’s ready. Each order comes with a dozen, so ordering multiples is the move if you’re with a group. Also good to know: the lamb dumplings here are halal.

I’ve been coming here for years now, and it’s still one of my top-rated dumpling spots in the city. No invite — just a place I genuinely keep coming back to.

I’ve been meaning to check out ALTEA Viet Coffee & Boba in Randhurst Village, Mount Prospect for a while now. I’d stopped by a couple times before but either there was a line or they were closed, so I was glad I finally got the chance. I kept it simple and went with the strawberry matcha — once mixed, it was really refreshing and something I genuinely enjoyed.

The space itself is pretty minimalistic with basic seating, a few chairs, and one couch — nothing too cozy, but straightforward. That said, being in Randhurst Village with so many shops and restaurants around makes it a nice stop, and the drinks definitely do the heavy lifting. They also have a lot of creative, experimental options on the menu, so I’ll probably branch out and try something different next time.

Warm pita, tender lamb, creamy tahini, and perfectly grilled tomatoes and onions — this lamb pita was everything I wanted for lunch. Simple, hearty, and clearly a local favorite with nonstop pickup traffic.

Got an early look at K**a West Loop’s Chicago Restaurant Week menu [Jan 23 – Feb 8] and this $60 dinner is a great option for anyone interested.

Each Restaurant Week dinner includes a pani puri, one small plate, one large plate, and one dessert — all picked from a curated list. Since we were two people, we were able to try more of the menu.

The Goan mussel curry was easily a standout — super flavorful, great portion, and something I’d highly recommend. We also tried the sweet potato chaat, the halibut in mustard coconut curry (loved the flavor!), and the tamarind-glazed short ribs, which were tender and satisfying.

Dessert closed it out strong with the pistachio kulfi and passion fruit chutney (always a win for me) and a big slab of chai tiramisu.

Stylish space, a huge mural by a local artist, and plenty of beautifully done cocktails make this feel like a full night out. If you’re mapping out your Chicago Restaurant Week stops, K**a in West Loop is definitely worth adding to the list.

Checked out Chapel Street cafe in Chicago – it’s billed as an Australian spot, a nod to the famous strip in Melbourne. What you actually get is a steady, comfortable meal in a clean, quiet space attached to the Hilton. Went with the popcorn shrimp, crab cakes, and an 8oz Wagyu steak with chimichurri – all cooked right, nothing flashy. Finished with strawberry red velvet cake.
A solid, reliable option if you’re in the area and want something consistent. Appreciate the invite.

Garibaldi’s has been around since the ‘70s, serving Italian comfort food in a laid-back, family-style setting. The Arlington Heights spot has that old-school diner charm — cozy atmosphere that feels familiar.

I tried the Philly cheese, chicken tenders, and BBQ chicken pizza — all pretty good. It’s the kind of place you go for a casual meal, maybe let the kids hit the arcade while you unwind with a slice.
