“Sweet Talking Machines: How Silicon Valley gets you to open up to AI”
 Ft. Dr. Andrea Guzman, Associate Professor, Department of Communitcation, Northern Illinois University

We know that successfully navigating life with other humans requires communication. It is how we build relationships, careers, and ultimately our society. Within the past two decades, many people also have started to increasingly communicate in human-like ways with chatbots and voice assistants. The most obvious advantage of “talking AI” is that it is so easy a child could do it (and many do!). Increasingly, many people are finding themselves relying more on AI and thinking of it as an assistant, friend, confidant, or even lover. In this talk, human-machine communication expert Andrea L. Guzman explains how the design of AI agents, such as ChatGPT and Alexa, draws upon key elements of human-human interaction that guide people toward certain uses and interpretations of technology.

Guzman explains how some of the human-like (and concerning) behaviors toward AI are intentionally cultivated by technology companies and how we can approach our conversations with AI more carefully.

Bio:
Andrea L. Guzman, PhD, is an associate professor of communication at Northern Illinois University. Her research focuses on people’s interactions with and perceptions of artificial intelligence, voice assistants and generative AI, and the implications of AI adoption across society. As a former journalist, Guzman also examines the integration of AI into media industries and as an educator for nearly two decades, has been helping faculty, administrators, and students navigate the pedagogical and ethical implications of AI in the classroom. Guzman is lead editor of The SAGE Handbook of Human-Machine Communication, editor of Human-Machine Communication: Rethinking Communication, Technology, and Ourselves, and currently co-writing a book on the communicative impact of voice assistants. https://andrealguzman.net.

CHICAGO ‘68 is an antiwar-wargame for 1-4 players, set during the police riots at the Democratic National Convention in the summer of 1968. Players take the roles of Yippie agitators, antiwar demonstrators, machine party bosses, and the Chicago Police Department in a struggle over the hearts and mind of the American public.
