Before you buy olive oil, check these 5 things:

1) Harvest Date: look for a printed harvest date. Not just a “”best by”” date, but a date the olives were actually harvested. Olive oil is not w**e and aging is not good. You want the freshest olive oil, which means from the most recent harvest.

2) Origin: look for a specific origin. “”Made in Italy”” doesn’t mean anything. Look for the country the olives were harvested, picked, and pressed in. The words “”single estate”” and “”single origin”” do much better than listing a bunch of countries the olive oil was blended from.

3) Olive Variety: there are several different types of varieties, and olive oil can come from a single variety or multiple. Seeing the actual variety is a sign of quality and that the brand cares enough to let you know.

4) Lab Results: very important. Usually found on the company’s website. Look for purity, polyphenols, and acidity levels.

5) Bottle: look for dark glass. Avoid olive oil in plastic or clear glass. Heat and light are olive oil’s worst enemies, and dark glass is the best way to protect the product.
