Events - Sleeping Village

Andy's was again thrilled to host a camera crew after hours for shooting portions of an upcoming music video for Waltzer (Sophie Sputnik). The release party and concert will be on February 7th at Sleeping Village (near Belmont and Milwaukee). As the saying goes: 'Be there or be square.'

Chicago based, dark soul, rock ‘n’ roll, country outfit Waltzer is a reminder of our favorite artists who still haunt us today. Summoning influences such as George Harrison, Ronnie Spector, Harry Nillson – the intention is to frantically call back to another time. Her general anxiety and unman...

A familiar sight...
A few months back Andy's hosted a small film crew shooting a comedy web series. We are the job location of one of the characters, and can be seen in episode 4. Created by Gaby Dixon & Ashlyn Hughes, 'Centered' is a comedic web series that follows a women's outpatient therapy group at a dilapidated clinic.

Wondering about high tomato prices (which apparently will keep rising in the short term)? Here is a weekly release that explains the cost issues behind all produce:
http://www.greenbergfruit.com/weekly.pdf

Nearly everything in the report is listed as "escalating" in price aside from cucumbers. Regarding tomatoes, whose price increase is listed as "extreme":

"Rounds: EXTREME
Vine ripe production is at an all time low crossing through Otay and McAllen. We are seeing demand exceed supply conditions on all Mexican production this week. All of this is a result of cold weather in Central Mexico that has literally stopped production. FOB prices are up over 20 dollars form last week.

Romas: EXTREME
We are seeing a demand exceeds supply condition through Otay and McAllen, and we do not expect relief until we see product availability in Nogales late next week. FOB’s are up over 20 dollars from last week."

Also mentioned in the report is that trucking prices are up about 25% in recent weeks because space is limited due to Christmas tree shipments.

Regarding plastic shopping bags:
According to our recycling company, shopping bags will be headed for landfills and not recycled because of the recent bans of used materials in China. (Google China/recycling/Green Fence).
China was taking in about half of the planet's recyclable waste (paper, plastics and metals) but all of that processing and leftover unusable waste has contributed to their environmental contamination problems. As such, they are only taking in the "cleanest", sorted materials now, which will likely adversely affect the US's recycling industry to the tune of billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of jobs. Further, as the biggest producer of plastic waste, the US will likely see much more plastic going into landfills instead of being recycled because costs here are so high and capacity is terribly low.
As a rule of thumb, we have been told that any colored plastic (the typical shopping bag, not clear like plastic wrap) will be going into trash and not recycled. Our fear is that there will be a surge back towards paper bags and boxes, which means forests will disappear at a faster rate (the reason manufacturers moved to plastic in the first place decades ago).
Please, please, please, invest in a cloth bag and get in the habit of carrying one around for shopping. It's the easiest way to see less trash and more trees.

Why are avocados so expensive?

so many reasons... consumption of avocados in the US alone is 75X more than what it was in 2000; the rest of the world has also increased consumption, especially China; at the same time, droughts over the last several years has reduced the crop yields in Mexico and California... the most recent one in Cali cut their crops by over 40%...

we recall the days of avocados selling at 3 for $1... ah, the good ole days...

What tastes better than bacon? Slow cooked pork crisps with the lard rendered out...

Our homemade duvan* čvarci is ready!

*A special variety of čvarci, known as Duvan Čvarci are produced in the Šumadija region of central Serbia and especially around the town of Užice. In case of duvan čvarci, the process of slow fat frying/cooking is prolonged until completely all fat is extracted. The remainder is a mass of delicate bacon fibers which resembles finely chopped to***co, thus giving the name to the variety: 'Duvan' is a Serbian word for to***co.

Andy's Fruit Ranch Cvarci

Čvarci (singular Čvarak) (Serbian Cyrillic: Чварци / Чварак) is a specialty popular in Balkan cuisine, a variant of pork rinds. They are a kind of pork 'crisps', with fat thermally extracted from the lard.

Čvarci are mostly a rustic countryside specialty, common to Serbia and Croatia, though they can also be found in some other countries of Southeastern Europe. They are usually homemade, and in larger cities obtained from farmer markets or in supermarkets.

In the video we are several hours into the process of making the "premium" variant (duvan cvarci) with about two more hours to go...

The Chicago ban on free plastic bags is in effect (since August 1). Though the ordinance was passed a year ago, many shoppers were caught unprepared, and we apologize for any inconvenience...

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING BAGS FOR YOUR PURCHASES!

We still are allowed to give small paper bags, cardboard boxes and produce bags (small, thin clear plastic bags) for no charge.

Reusable fabric bags are still available for purchase ($2) that can serve you for several years, and we now have heavy duty plastic reusable sacks (which should be reusable for up to a year of normal wear) for 10 cents each.
