We love all of the squash this season has to offer, but we thought we would focus on one of the standout fall stars, Butternut squash. ⁠

Butternut Squash is loaded with micronutrients and is a wonderful way to get your vitamins in. We’ve integrated butternut squash into a handful of our fall dishes to promote seasonal eating, and the benefits that squash has on your health:⁠

🦴 Promote Bone Health ⁠
Butternut Squash has lots of naturally occurring manganese which helps the body maintain healthy bone structure, calcium absorption, and improves the mineral density of the spinal column. Additionally, vitamin C takes part in the production of collagen, which is important for building bone mass.⁠

Squash is loaded with vitamin A, zeaxanthin, and lutein, which are all incredibly important for protecting and improving eyesight.⁠

Our Cocoa date balls are made of natural & nutritious ingredients:⁠

🌰 Medjool dates: High in potassium and B vitamins which aid in supporting nervous system function as well as helping to manage the metabolic processes that convert food to energy. These benefits paired with the high fiber content promote regularity and energy production within the body. ⁠

🥜 Almond Flour: Rich in monounsaturated fats and magnesium which are crucial in keeping your cholesterol and blood sugar levels under control.⁠

As we continue to grow as a company we are always looking at ways to improve our processes, our service, and of course our food. To that end, we've brought in Anneka Miller, our new in-house nutrition consultant who has been hard at work behind the scenes to make sure our dishes are as healthy and nutritious as possible. We are so excited to incorporate some healthy tweaks to our menu! Some of these changes include:

🧂Reduced Sodium — All of our dishes now contain less than 750 mg of sodium (which is less than 30% of your Daily Value) Some of you might feel like our dishes have become a bit lighter in flavor as a result. If you are still looking for an extra kick, we are including @chefcorymorris Secret Seasoning Blend to every order. This way we're ensuring a health-conscious base meal and allowing you to customize for your own personal taste.

🍽Standardized Portions — We’ve taken the time to standardize our portions for the well-being of our customers and to ensure we are in line with industry best practices. By re-portioning our dishes, we are minimizing food waste and ensuring each dish you eat is nutritionally balanced while still being packed with flavor.

❤️ Heart-Healthy Swaps — We’ve reduced the saturated fat content in many of our dishes to help keep your heart healthy and to leave you feeling energized after your meal. We are continually looking to offer more plant-based and healthy-yet-hearty dishes to our menu!

If there is anything we are going to miss about Summer, it is the seasonal watermelon 🍉 from our local farm friends over @harrison_market .

Watermelon is a great source of lycopene, an antioxidant that you might mostly correlate with tomatoes (check out our tomato highlight!). Along with the lycopene, watermelon is high in Vitamin C.

🚨 New menu item alert! 

We are bringing big Middle Eastern flavors with Lamb Kofta coming to the menu next week!

This Middle Eastern dish is made of ground lamb with a blend of onions, garlic, and various spices that are formed into a long "meatball" and baked to perfection. Lamb contains more vitamins than most red meats bringing loads of iron, zinc, and vitamin B12 into your diet! The Kofta comes with a delicious side of homemade hummus and pita bread. 🫓

It’s Tomato Time!

We are loving our @mightyvine tomatoes because they are bursting with flavor and nutrition 🍅.

Mighty Vine is a local Illinois farm that grows tomatoes in a glasshouse. This allows the tomatoes to be grown year round and our now available in two Chicagoland locations.

Tomatoes are packed with an antioxidant called lycopene. Lycopene gives the fruit their vibrant red color and protects your cells from oxidative damage (also know as protecting you from harmful free radicals in your body!). Additionally, tomatoes contain substantial amounts of Vitamins B and E, potassium, and other nutrients.

On this week’s menu, we have a delicious dish that includes tomatoes from mighty vine, the Mighty Vine Panzenella.

This Italian-style salad is perfectly fresh for summer, combining vine-ripened Mighty Vine tomatoes with fresh mozzarella, sliced cucumber, pickled red onions, and sourdough croutons soaked in our house-made basil lemon zest vinaigrette.

🤲🏻 This year we are joining Nourish Our City, a month-long fundraiser that celebrates Meals on Wheels Chicago’s Birthday!

💌 When we met up with the team over at Meals on Wheels Chicago, we had the opportunity to write Love Notes that are included in each delivery bag. The Love Notes Program was implemented to help brighten someone’s day! Volunteers create thousands of handmade cards each month that are delivered along with meals to seniors.

“Loneliness is common for our clients with 84% telling us their delivery driver is the only social interaction they have all week. The pandemic has only made the isolation worse. Handmade cards are a great way to remind seniors they aren’t alone! We are so grateful to the volunteers that help us deliver smiles and nutritious meals to our clients.” – Elise Geiger, Executive Director Meals on Wheels Chicago

🚨 New menu item alert!  We are bringing big Middle Eastern flavors with Lamb Kofta coming to the menu next week! This Middle Eastern dish is made of ground lamb with a blend of onions, garlic, and various spices that are formed into a long "meatball" and baked to perfection. Lamb contains more vitamins than most red meats bringing loads of iron, zinc, and vitamin B12 into your diet!
