Good Morning Frens! Here is a little video outlining our Homestead, what has worked, and what hasn't. We still have lots to do but we are having so much fun. It is a lot of work and most of the time we are behind on everything, but that's the way it goes. We are proud of what we have accomplished so far and we hope to continue improving our Homestead. Good Afternoon Frens! Sorry I haven't posted in a while but been real busy on the homestead (and RL work picked up over the past couple of weeks as well). Today my wife and I went out to the woods where we will keep the 200 hens and built the roosting area under the roosting coop. We cut down lots of small saplings (don't worry, our woods has tons of new growth and it needed thinning out anyway). We used these to build the frame as well as the roosting poles. Could have done it all much faster if I had just bought some dimensional lumber but this way it looks way more rustic and I think the chickens will like it more as the larger and rounder poles will be better for their feet. It was a lot more work than I had really counted on and so glad my wife was able to help me today. So there are 13 total poles 16 feet long which should accommodate at least 200 hens. I will be making a little video in the next few days. We hope to have all the chickens out in their new area tomorrow afternoon. I ran out of fencing and had to order one more section of the electric netting which is due to arrive tomorrow. As long as it arrives we will somehow get them out there and I will take some photos and hopefully a little video to share.

Hello Frens! Got our Duroc/Poland mix pigs back from the processor this past week. Was barely able to make everything fit. 2 pigs = 460 lbs. of meat. Should last us quite a while. Also, this Friday we should have a total for our 2 incubators we set up a couple of weeks ago. Got a few people to call that we met at Big D's flea market down in Dalton a few weeks ago who said to call them the next time we incubated some eggs. 2 incubators - 60 eggs. Will be interesting to see our hatch rate this time around. Will post an update next weekend.

So finally finished the 'duck house', put up the fencing, installed a gate, and set up their little swimming pool. We put them out and I can tell it will take them a few days to get settled in. This is their first time outside so I'm sure it is quite a shock. I still have to run some electric fencing along the top and bottom to keep out predators. Hope they like their new area.

So a quick update on the 200 Rhode Island Red chicks. They are growing quickly and have already outgrown their little feeders and waterers. I made some makeshift feeding troughs from some PVC downspouts and upgraded their watering stations. Growing means eating more and needing more water. Next step will be to get them out in the coops where they can roam and get some natural feed of bugs. They should be completely feathered out here in the next couple of weeks so I hope to have everything done by then.

Good Morning gang! Haven't posted in a while but some good news. We have expanded our chicken flock. Today we received our order of 200 Rhode Island Red chicks. Hopefully by the end of September or sometime in October we should start seeing some eggs from these little ones. Our other Barred Rocks are producing eggs like crazy but this will be on another level. Once they start producing we will also be incubating eggs from the RIRs so keep a watch out and if you are in the market, or know someone who is looking for Rhode Island Reds, we hope to start incubating by the end of the year.

Good Early Morning Gang! This past weekend we drove down south a bit to pick up some Muscovy ducklings. Heidy is in love now. They are the cutest things. Also, in the past couple of days we successfully incubated 28 out of 30 eggs this time around. Pretty good incubation rate. I had candled these at 7 days and my count was 26 so I apparently missed a couple. At any rate we now have a bunch of fluffy furry balls down in the brooder box. Homesteading can be challenging but so rewarding. We can't wait to see how the Muscovy ducks turn out and what kind color patterns they display when they feather out. Will post update photos in a few weeks.

Hey gang! We got the hang weights of our first 2 pigs that we took to the processor. 288 lbs., and 268 lbs. respectively which puts the live weights somewhere around 380 - 400 lbs. That was a surprise. So now we have 3 more we need to find freezer homes for. These 3 pigs should be ready for their new homes in about 4 - 5 weeks. If you are in the market give us a shout for all the details.
