We often get the question, “What are those things around the almond? It doesn’t look like an almond to me!” We love informing the public of the complexities of the wonderful crop!

The hull is the soft, green outer covering that surrounds the almond as it develops. As the almond matures, the hull dries, splits open, and eventually separates from the hard shell. This natural process is an important indicator that the almond is approaching harvest.💚

Inside the hull is the shell, the hard, woody layer that protects the almond kernel. The shell acts as a natural barrier, helping protect the kernel from environmental conditions, insects, and physical damage as it develops. Once harvested, almonds go through processing where the dried hull and hard shell are removed, revealing the edible kernel inside. 🤎🌻

This is what almond harvest season looks like from the ground up. 🌳

After months of growing and careful orchard management, mature almonds begin their journey toward harvest.

Once the almonds are ready, they are shaken from the trees and gathered from the orchard floor. Their outer hulls and shells protect the kernel inside, helping preserve the almond as it moves through drying, hulling, shelling, and processing.

For us, farming is more than simply growing a crop. It’s about taking care of the land, understanding the trees, adapting to the conditions of each growing season, and putting in the work necessary to produce a quality product.🌻🚜

🌳 Happy harvest! 🌳
The almond harvest is underway! Our sweeper is hard at work gathering the almonds that were shaken from the trees a few days ago and sweeping them into neat windrows. Here, they’ll continue to dry naturally under the warm Northern California sun before being picked up and taken to the huller and sheller for sorting and processing.

Here's a behind the scenes look at how we harvest almonds in our young orchard. 🌳
We use a tree shaker to literally shake the almonds right off the branches! This is a huge improvement from the old days when every tree had to be knocked by hand with a long pole with rubber on the end.
Once they're on the ground, the almonds are swept into neat rows where they dry in the orchard before heading to the huller and sheller.

It's an amazing process from tree to table! Turn up the sound to hear the shaker at work! 🚜🌻

Fun fact: The tractor that shakes the almonds from the trees is actually called a shaker—simple, but fitting!
