Today we were called out to Capital Towing & Recovery in Columbus after a swarm of honeybees decided one of their trailers looked like the perfect temporary home!

Instead of calling an exterminator, Capital Towing did the right thing and called Buckeye Valley Homestead so the bees could be safely removed and relocated. 🙌🐝

The swarm was successfully collected and moved into a hive where they’ll have a new home and purpose.

On a personal note — I know the folks at Capital Towing personally, and they are truly some great people. Good-hearted, professional, and the kind of company that cares about doing the right thing.

Today we got a call that needed immediate attention—a homeowner was allergic to bees, and a swarm had just moved in.

This is exactly why we do what we do.

Within a short time, we were on-site and safely removed the swarm without harm to the bees or risk to the homeowner. 🙌

👉 What you’re seeing here is the process:

* Swarm located in a tree
* Carefully collected and transferred
* Placed into a hive box to give them a new home

Swarms may look intimidating, but most are actually very calm—they’re just looking for a place to live. The real danger comes when the situation isn’t handled properly, especially when allergies are involved.

These trainings equip everyday people, healthcare providers, and community members with the skills needed to respond in real emergencies.

Would you know what to do if someone around you stopped breathing or had a medical emergency?

Out here in the country, help isn’t always right around the corner. That’s why knowing CPR and First Aid is so important for families, homesteads, and our community.

This weekend, First In Safety — our sister organization — will be teaching a couple of life-saving classes right here in Chillicothe, and there’s still room if anyone is interested.

We’ve been getting everything ready this week — cleaning equipment, replacing lungs in the mannequins, and making sure everything is set up for a safe, hands-on training experience.

First In Safety will be teaching two upcoming American Red Cross certification classes next weekend at the American Red Cross in Chillicothe.

🐝❄️ Did You Know Honeybees Can Die Just Inches Away From Food?

One of the saddest things a beekeeper can discover in the spring is a hive where the bees starved during the winter… even though honey was still in the hive.

How does that happen?

During cold weather, honeybees form a tight winter cluster around their queen to stay warm. The bees on the outside vibrate their muscles to generate heat while the bees inside stay protected.

But here’s the challenge…

🍯 The cluster must slowly move through the hive to reach stored honey.

If a sudden cold snap hits and the cluster can’t move, the bees may become trapped in place. Even if honey is only a few inches away, the cluster may not be able to break apart to reach it without freezing.

So the bees remain clustered…
until they eventually starve with food still nearby.

It’s a powerful reminder of how delicate the balance of nature can be.

This is why beekeepers carefully monitor hive stores and sometimes provide winter feed or emergency sugar boards to help colonies survive long winters.

Spring is finally arriving in Southern Ohio, and we’re excited to see our bees bringing in fresh pollen and new life to the hive. 🌼🐝

🐝⚠️ SEE A BALL OF BEES? DON’T PANIC! ⚠️🐝

You may be looking at a honey bee swarm.

Every spring and early summer, honey bee colonies reproduce by sending out a swarm with their queen to find a new home. When this happens, thousands of bees may gather on a tree branch, fence post, or building.

The good news is:
👉 Swarming bees are usually very calm.
👉 They are not protecting a hive yet.
👉 They are simply resting while scout bees search for a new home.

🐝 This is actually one of the most fascinating moments in nature!

If you see a swarm in Southern Ohio, don’t spray them and don’t disturb them.

These worker bees are returning to the hive carrying pollen packed on their back legs. This pollen is one of the most important food sources for the colony.

🌼 Pollen = protein for baby bees (brood)
🍯 Nectar = carbohydrates for energy

When you see bees bringing in pollen like this, it’s usually a great sign that the queen is laying eggs and the colony is growing.

Spring is waking up in Southern Ohio — and the bees are getting to work.
