Before tractors… before combines… before GPS and modern technology…

There was a blacksmith with an idea.

In 1837, John Deere created a polished steel plow that could cut through the thick prairie soil without constantly clogging. What seemed like a simple invention helped change farming in America forever.

But this story is about more than equipment.

Hard ground must be broken before seed can grow.

The same is true spiritually.

Sometimes our hearts become hardened by sin, worry, pride, anger, or the struggles of life. God’s Word works like a plow — breaking up the soil of the heart so truth can take root and produce fruit.

“Break up your fallow ground, And do not sow among thorns.”
— Jeremiah 4:3

This begins a new series on J.D.’S Faith on the Farm where we’ll look at the history of old farm equipment, the people who used it, lessons from farm life, and spiritual truths we can learn along the way.

UNDER AUTHORITY
Lesson 1 — All Authority Begins With God

“There is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”
— Romans 13:1 (NKJV)

Authority is one of the most misunderstood subjects in our world today.

Many people see authority only as:
• control
• restriction
• power
• rules

But the Bible teaches that authority actually begins with God Himself.

God established authority for:
• order instead of confusion
• peace instead of chaos
• protection instead of destruction
• guidance instead of every man doing what is right in his own eyes

Even Jesus said:
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”
(Matthew 28:18)

Every authority on earth is temporary.
God’s authority is eternal.

The problem is not authority itself…
The problem comes when people reject God’s authority or abuse the authority they have been given.

As Christians, our view of authority should not begin with culture, politics, emotions, or personal preferences.

It should begin with God.

🚜 Remembering John Deere Days at J.D. Webb Incorporated 🚜

Growing up around our family’s John Deere dealership in Estherville, Iowa, “John Deere Days” were always special. Farmers from all around the area would come to the store, visit with neighbors, look at equipment, enjoy demonstrations, and learn more about farming and safety.

One thing my sister and I especially remember was a safety cartoon called “Gotta Go Joe.” It may have been a simple cartoon, but it carried an important message that still matters today: farm safety saves lives.

Farm life is rewarding, but it can also be dangerous if we become careless or rushed. Tractors, PTO shafts, augers, chemicals, livestock, and even everyday chores can become deadly in just a moment. Many of us who grew up on farms remember hearing the phrase:

“Take your time and do it safely.”

That lesson still matters today — not just on the farm, but in life as well.

Safety is really about stewardship:

* taking care of ourselves,
* protecting our families,
* and making wise decisions.

Why did people wash feet in the Bible?

Back then, people walked dusty roads in sandals.

When guests arrived, offering water to wash their feet was:
👉 Practical
👉 Refreshing
👉 A sign of welcome

🤝 The Deeper Meaning

Foot washing wasn’t just about cleanliness…

It was:

* A task for the lowest servant
* A picture of humility
* A way to honor others

✝️ Then Jesus Changed Everything

In John 13, Jesus—the Son of God—did the unthinkable…

He washed His disciples’ feet.

Why?

👉 To show that true greatness is serving
👉 To teach humility
👉 To leave us an example

🌾 The Real Lesson

Jesus wasn’t just teaching about washing feet…

He was teaching:
👉 Serve others
👉 Lower yourself
👉 Put people before pride

Why don’t we fast today?

Jesus didn’t say “you must fast”…
He said “when you fast” — shifting the focus from a command to the heart behind it.

Here’s the truth:

✔️ Fasting is not required for Christians
✔️ It was practiced—but occasionally
✔️ God cares more about sincerity than show

Fasting can still have a place today…
But it should be:

👉 Personal
👉 Purposeful
👉 Between you and God
