Let's talk about SWARMS!

What is a swarm? You might be wondering...

There is a true science behind a bee swarm and why they happen. Often times it's due to a colony growing too large for a current hive and it becomes crowded. The old queen of the hive will decide to leave to find a larger, more sufficient space. Along with her, you will find roughly half of the worker bees following along to create a NEW colony! 🏘️

When does this happen?

Now! Spring time is the start of when you will see swarms in places you haven't before. Swarms are mobile mostly during warm, sunny, and Spring days. When the temperatures ramp up, bee activity does as well. ☀️🌷

What should I do if I have a swarm?

Reach out to Winkel Hive Honey Co.! We are happy to assist with removing a swarm from easy access areas to ensure the livelihood of the bees. Please do not exterminate them, they should cause no harm unless they feel endangered! We are happy to assist with removing the bees and giving them a proper new home.🏡🍯

March blizzard means prep-work for the upcoming season. Today’s task, making feeder buckets.

Extra buckets are available for purchase. Great for seasoned beekeepers looking for a new feeding system or for anyone preparing for their first season.

Will have over 75 available for sale. Buckets are 1 gallon food grade buckets with removable predrilled tint plugs for right away use. The tint plugs are drilled with 5 1/16” holes. Looking to get $6 per bucket. Purchase 10 or more of them and I’ll lower it to $5.50 per bucket.

For a bee Keeper, there are not many sights that can compare to opening the hive on the first warm day of the new year and seeing a healthy hive. These bees have ate through their winter stockpile of food and needed some extra sugar bricks so they could pull through until spring.

As the weather cools and flowers fade, our bees need a little extra help getting ready for winter. 🐝 This time of year, we provide a light sugar water mixture — a simple but important supplement that mimics the nectar they can no longer find outdoors.
It’s not a replacement for honey, but it gives the bees the energy they need to stay strong and healthy through the colder months. Every drop helps them build up their stores and keep the hive buzzing until spring returns! 🍁💛

Meet your BEEKEEPER!

Bradley is the heart (and muscle!) behind Winkel Hive Honey Co. 🐝
He’s the one suiting up, tending the hives, and making sure our bees stay happy and healthy. What started as a simple fascination with beekeeping, while learning from a friend’s dad, quickly became a full-blown passion!

This is his first year beekeeping, and it’s been a journey full of new lessons, excitement, and a few bee stings along the way. Each day brings something new to learn, and he’s committed to continuing to grow right alongside his hives.

Every jar of honey is a sweet reflection of that care and dedication that Bradley puts in everyday. 💛🍯

FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🐝🍯

Did you know:
In late summer and early fall, the queen bee begins laying special winter bees — larger, longer-living workers that can survive for months (instead of just a few weeks like summer bees). They’ll be the ones keeping the hive alive until spring.

As fall progresses, the queen’s egg-laying slows dramatically or even stops altogether. This conserves food and reduces the need to care for larvae during the cold months!

FUN FACT FRIDAY 🐝!!

Did you know as fall creeps in closer our hives start to emit an aroma that smells like buttered popcorn 🍿…

This is due to the blooming of GOLDENROD! Goldenrod is known as a late season bloomer. While our bees work hard to prepare their stock for the winter they bring in goldenrod nectar.

The processing of this nectar yields an aroma often described as “buttery popcorn”.

This aroma is super normal for this time of the year and often times marks the “End of the Summer” for bee keepers. 🍂🍁🌼
