We are currently taking a break from raising chickens. A couple of months ago, our home insurance provider reached out to inform us that they would no longer cover us due to our farm, as they don't insure farm owners. We embarked on a mission to find alternative insurance providers, but the quotes we received would have added an extra $1500 to $2000 to our annual expenses. Our farm has always been a labor of love, a hobby farm where we cultivate food to bless our family and friends, rather than a profit-driven business. We had 12 egg-laying chickens remaining on our farm, with plans to once again raise meat chickens in the future. However, a predator attack took out our entire flock, and the insurance hurdle led us to make the difficult decision to unregister our farm and discontinue operations for the time being. Although this setback is temporary, it's reassuring to know that our passion for farming will ultimately prevail. Every time I gaze out my dining room window, I'm reminded of the joy that our farm brought us, and I'm filled with determination to revive our farmstead in the future. Despite the numerous challenges we've faced over the past two years, I firmly believe that this is not the end of our farmstead journey.
