A month in on our new shelves and we'll say it again: there's nobody behind a counter here.

You come in, you take your time, you pick what looks good, and you pay on the honour system. That's it. It worked when we opened and it's working now.

Some people still can't quite believe it and stand there waiting for someone to appear. Nobody's coming. Take your groceries. We trust you.

First time? Message us and we'll walk you through it.

Our wall, on the way past.

The bison going over the cliff is the pishkun β€” the buffalo jump the store is named for. The bag is what we actually do about it now.

Somebody painted this for us and we look at it every day. If you've driven by and wondered which building we're in: it's this one.

Look for the bison.

This is the family whose lamb is in our freezer.

Brent and Tracie Roeder started Montana Sheep Company with what they describe as β€œa dream, an unfenced piece of ground, 50 sheep, and a lot of hope.” That was about twenty years ago. They run it now with their children β€” Ben, Caroline and Wes.

They raise Targhee, a breed built for Montana: born at home on the Greenfield Bench, summered along the Blackfoot River near the Garnet Mountains. In their own words β€” Montana grown and family owned, sustainably raised on Montana range, no antibiotics, entirely grass fed.

The name is older than any of them. The first Montana Sheep Company was founded in 1881. The Roeders bought the outfit in 2006 and kept it.

We've brought in ground lamb and loin chops. That's it β€” it's our first order from them, and there isn't much of it.

In the freezer now.

Buffalo Breath. Bear Attack. Moose Drool.

Those are soaps, and they're made in Montana by a mother and son who started in their own kitchen β€” one batch of lavender soap that came out very yellow and a little too thick to pour. They kept going. Roots & Shoots has been at it since 2024.

The whole Montana Collection is named for what lives out here. Buffalo Breath is gingerbread and cinnamon, made as a nod to the bison's comeback β€” which feels about right, given what's painted on our wall.

It isn't only soap. We carry the lotions, the tallow salves, the lip balm and the serum too.

Olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil. Hand cut, cruelty free, nothing you can't pronounce.

On the shelf now. Come have a look.

Autumn arrived on the shelf before it arrived on the calendar.

Carnival squash, kabocha, red kuri, acorn β€” the striped ones, the deep green ones, the little orange ones that look like they were painted. They came in over the weekend and the bins are full.

These are the vegetables that keep. Buy them now, put them on the counter, and they'll still be good when it's properly cold.

Roast one whole with butter and salt. That's the whole recipe.

On the rack now.

Archery season's open. Here's the shelf for it.

Freeze-dried meals that go in a pack and come back out as dinner β€” Peak Refuel chicken pesto pasta and beef pasta marinara, Pinnacle Foods thai peanut curry, jalapeΓ±o cheddar biscuits and sausage gravy. Angry Pika granola for the cold mornings, made over in Teton Valley.

Bison jerky from Yellowstone Foods. Beef sticks. Trail cookies, fig bars, sprouted seeds, dried fruit. A Trangia mess tin if you still need one, plus bear spray, water purification, first aid and a toothbrush you forgot.

It's all on one rack by the door so you're not walking the store at 5am.

Open at 6:30, which is before you need to leave.

In case you've driven past us twice.

We're at 25 1st Street NW in Choteau. Look for the sign with the bag of groceries on it, or the bison on the side wall. We're in the brick building β€” the arrow points you the rest of the way.

Open every single day, 6:30 in the morning until 9 at night. Including the days everything else in town is shut.

The half & half is the one people come back for.

Same Kalispell Kreamery milk, same cream on top β€” you can see the cream line right there through the bottle, sitting above the rest. Nothing homogenised it into submission.

It goes in coffee and it ruins you for the other stuff. Fair warning.

Pint bottles, in the cooler. We don't get many and they don't last.

In the cooler now.

Local Potatoes, $4.49 for five pounds.

That little shelf tag is doing a lot of work. Not β€œpotatoes” β€” local potatoes, grown close enough that we can say so on the label.

Onions and garlic next to them, melons underneath. This is the plain end of the store: the things you actually cook with, at a price that doesn't need explaining.

Good food doesn't need chemicals, and it doesn't need to travel far.

On the rack now.

The last of it.

Blueberries in the little green baskets, and sweet corn still in the husk with the silk on. Both of them are running out their final weeks β€” this is the end of the summer produce, not the middle of it.

Once these go, we're into squash and apples and the things that keep until spring.

So: eat the corn now. You'll be glad you did in January.

On the rack now.
