Drought tends to be GOOD for two things:

1. Finding out how good your grazing management really is.
2. Putting your cattle’s fleshing ability to the test.

Like many producers, we’re short on grass this fall and it doesn’t look like we’ll have much fall fescue to carry us into winter. Even so, our CCF Balancer genetics are holding their own, making the most of what’s available with no protein supplementation and no hay thus far, proving bigger framed cattle can indeed be just as efficient and low input as smaller framed cattle when genetically selected and procreated.

Fleshing ability is one of the most economically important traits in a cow herd. Cows that can maintain a 5.5–7 BCS on fewer inputs are more likely to stay productive, breed back, and keep more dollars in your pocket. Feed efficiency isn’t just about gain—it’s about doing more with less.

For years, we’ve focused on building Balancer cattle for the Southeast that combine easy fleshing ability at a size buyers and feeders demand: large moderate to large frame, efficient cattle in the 1,300–1,650 lb mature cow range that work in the real world, not just on paper.

Good cattle ultimately have to do more than look good in the pasture. At the end of the day, they have to perform all the way to the rail.

We’ve spent years crafting our Balancer genetics around cattle that can thrive in the southeast, feed efficiently in the feedlot, and ultimately produce an end product that makes the grade and delivers a great eating experience for consumer.

Most seedstock operations sell a bull or bloodline and never see what the genetics do beyond the sale. We track and study ours all the way to the rail — even the culls.

Every animal we harvest from our operation is tracked from the time it goes on feed all the way to the rail. We collect carcass notes on what those cattle actually produce — including the things that matter when it comes to putting a high-quality steak on someone’s plate.

The pictures below are examples of the kind of marbling and carcass quality we’ve worked hard to build into our genetics.

We feed cattle.

And we sell our beef directly to consumers 12 months a year.

A few poor quality cell phone sample pics of some of our up-and-coming CCF Balancer bulls this evening out grazing.

We believe how you develop a bull matters just as much as how you breed one.

Our bulls are developed slowly and naturally for longevity and functionality. They receive approximately 6 lbs. per head of a basic 13% protein commodity mix per day while being expected to graze, travel and work for their keep. We want these bulls developing sound feet, legs, structure and muscle — not simply being pushed for maximum gain.

Our genetics are designed and bred to thrive and succeed from the pasture, to the feedlot, to the rail. We want a bull that can go out and cover cows, handle the Southeast’s challenging humid fescue environments, stay sound and productive for years, and ultimately add pounds when on feed and value to his calves on the rail.

Every bull goes through a 60-day performance test following a 90-day weaning period. We strive to produce thick-made, solid, functional bulls that are built to work, thrive and add value to the commercial cattleman’s bottom line.

These boys will be available in the upcoming months, and as we’ve experienced in the past, our bulls tend to sell out fast.

It’s been a busy summer here at CCF! We’ve had an abnormally wet summer, but we’re blessed to be rolling into August with an abundance of good grass.

With calving season just around the corner, it’s a good feeling to have plenty of forage available for the various herds. We’re thankful for the rain, the grass, and the opportunity to do what we love each day.
