These cuties are LOVING the mud!! They have plenty of dry land at the top of the hill, but they prefer to spend the majority of their day swimming and rooting around in the mud at the bottom. By the way, our whole herd is up for sale. $1200 takes 3 adults and 6 piglets, that averages out to about $133 per pig. Let us know if you're interested!

Homemade fly repellent has been a lifesaver for us! It doesn't kill the flies, but it definitely has cut back the numbers. Some days I don't have to use it at all, other days I have to use it twice a day. Hazel and the goats aren't particularly fond of the spray, but I'm sure they're thankful to have not have those jokers biting them! When I sprayed today, poor Willow actually fainted for the first time since being here. I also spray down the doors to their houses/pens, the walls and the chicken coop, too!

My Recipe:
2 Cups Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar
3 TBSP Olive Oil
2 TBSP Dawn Dish Soap
15 Drops Lemongrass Essential Oil
15 Drops Cedarwood Essential Oil
15 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil
15 Drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
15 Drops Rosemary Essential Oil
15 Drops Fir Needle Essential Oil

Put it all in a spray bottle (as you can see, I just use my Bragg's bottle with a sprayer), fill the bottle the rest of the way with water, shake it up and start spraying (do NOT spray in or around the eyes)!! Shake well before each use.

There are plenty of other essential oils that could be used with or in place of these other essential oils. These are just some that I keep on hand at all times. I prefer essential oils from Mountain Rose Herbs, but everyone has their favorites. Just make sure you're using high quality essential oils! I do recommend that you do your research if you're not familiar with essential oils, as some can be dangerous for your animals!

Homemade fire cider. It may not be the prettiest and it's definitely not the tastiest, but it's the BEST medicine! Antiviral, antibacterial, antieverything! Every year, I end up with a super nasty allergy episode that results in a sinus infection and bronchitis. Every. Single. Year. It used to be late Summer or early Fall. Over the past few years, I've noticed it is happening a little earlier in the year. Last year it was August, this year it's June. I ALWAYS try to treat it at home, but I typically end up in the doctor's office at least once. Usually it's more like 3 times to the doctor, trying to figure out a way to get rid of the mess. This year, I had a little medicine leftover from last year, but it didn't seem to be really doing the trick. Tonight, I remembered that I had some homemade fire cider leftover in the pantry. I went and took a couple of tablespoons and immediately felt relief. My chest loosened up, the cough became productive, my sinus congestion eased, my sinus headache eased, my throat cleared....All within seconds of knocking down the fire cider! On top of all of that, it has tons of natural antibacterial and immune system boosting properties that will kick in to help fight off any sort of underlying infection that I may have brewing from this nastiness. Not sure why I've never thought to keep it on hand past cold and flu season, especially for this, but from now on, it'll be in my pantry year round!!

These gorgeous little weedeaters were looking for a new home and it just so happens that we had the perfect place for them! They'll never run out of weeds here! We have renamed them in the Hollow's End fashion, so say hello to Willow (the girl with the white face), Olive (the girl with the multi-colored face), Methuselah (the chocolate brown buckling) and Alder (the shy black & white buckling).

On Tuesday, I was telling someone how my hens sometimes like to sneak off and hatch babies, making it difficult to keep up with the number of chickens around here. On Wednesday, I heard chirping coming out from under the lean-to. We went to investigate and found Lacey, our sweet little Old English banty, no bigger than a pigeon, inside of an old, rusty lawn mower wagon with some new babies. They're Old English/Silkie crosses, so tiny and adorable! She has now been moved to the maternity ward and the remaining eggs were tucked under a broody Silkie.

Today, I realized that it has been way too long since I've given you guys any updates or pictures! A lot of you are pretty far behind on the homestead happenings and I'm about to overwhelm you! Our sweet Dixie dog passed away from liver failure in December at 8 years old and within the same week, we acquired Hazel, a Jersey cross heifer. We're looking forward to having her bred this December so that we can begin our milking journey. In January, we had another litter of piglets, which were all reserved within the first 2 weeks of life. After that, we got Juniper, a precious Australian Shepherd/Boxer mix pup. She and Maple (our Red Bone/Blue Heeler mix) have really grown to love each other. The rabbits have been retired, but are still living in luxury and other than some new guineas, ducks and chickens, everything else has pretty much remained the same. I hope y'all are doing well!!

I've told y'all before how hard homesteading life can be and yesterday proved to be no different. We had a couple of broody hens fighting over a clutch of eggs and 3 of the 6 eggs ended up being crushed. I tried so hard, but one of the chicks didn't make it. I wasn't sure that the other two would either. They were both still attached to their eggs. Alvin was a fighter, I could tell from the moment I got his little head uncovered! He was so strong and full of life! The little girl was weak. Her intestines were hanging out of her umbilicus, but I wasn't about to give up on her. I left the bottom of the shell attached to her and pressed it against her belly and proceeded to wrap her in a makeshift egg made of vet tape. She stayed very weak, but I put her under the heat lamp and let her have time. About 6 hours later, I went to peak in at her (for the 50th time) and she had kicked her way out of the vet tape egg, as if it were a real egg shell. I was so scared of what I was going to find when I picked her up, but when I picked her up, I was overjoyed that I found her intestines had reabsorbed and that the umbilicus had closed up!!! She had a difficult time making her way into the world, but she is a trooper!! Everyone, this is Alice. Alice, this is everyone!

My front porch railing was falling apart and last night, I came home to see the first post up on my rustic log porch!! Like with so many other things around here, the logs are being harvested from our own property! This was all Garrett's idea/design and the kids did the majority of the bark peeling! It's going to look beautiful!!!!!
