We decided not to breed last fall, so no spring lambs this year. That doesn't mean we didn't have our share of babies on the farm. This place is a sanctuary for birds and a repeat nesting spot. So far, we have counted these hatchlings: Red-tailed Hawk (2), American Kestrel (5), Eastern Screech Owl (2), Bluebirds (12 or more), Mockingbird (2), Tree Swallow (12 or more), American Robin (5), House Wren-8 and Carolina Wren (5), Wood Duck (18). Others with an active nest but nestlings not observed: Phoebe, Barn Swallow, Brown Thrasher, Baltimore Oriole, Eastern Kingbird, Chipping Sparrow, Tufted Titmouse, Red-headed Woodpecker, & Carolina Chickadee. The bird in the photo is a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk that is thinking about leaving the nest (taken through the spotting scope).
