Progress!! She actually chose to come stand next to me yesterday and intiated light contact. Slow and steady with this gal! But man can she move!! I see this gal being an amazing representative of the breed in dressage!! 😍😍

I’m not gonna lie... sometimes, working with mustangs is HARD! They make you question your abilities and whether you are capable of breaking through to them. Yesterday was HARD! I was ready to throw in the towel and find a trainer who was ‘better’ than me. To never try a wild one again because I couldn’t train them. We are talking Rock bottom melt down. Today, we re-grouped. Had a pep talk and some outside thoughts from my wonderful hubby, Jamie. Whined some more and approached today’s session with some new tactics. It may not look like much. But Winter let me scratch her back for the first time! For 4 weeks, this girl has shook and retreated to a corner, completely shut down, whenever we enter her pen. This touch feels like a major breakthrough with her. Sometimes, we just have to step back, regroup and try again.

I haven’t posted about the new gals for a bit. Largely because I was away on work for a week and spent 4 days at the Horse World Expo promoting mustang adoption and didn’t have a chance to work with them much. 😂They are coming along... slowly. The bay mare wants to be friends and approaches me. She will eat from a bucket and allows gentle face touches. The grey mare is still very scared. Her bubble is still 10’+. And if you push her, she shuts down. She will hang out with me while she eats grain as long as I stay on the outside of the fence. She’s not mean in any way. Just very scared. The bay mare is bagged up and should foal shortly. Her run in is prepped. Hoping she doesn’t decide to foal during the major storms we have coming thru in the next 3 days! Both girls are shedding and vverrry itchy! Just need to get those first scratches in and I think they will melt like putty. ❤️

The paperwork is signed and the mustangs are paid, so let’s make this Facebook official! Mares 6419 (grey 8yr old 14’1) and 6478 (bay 7 year old 15’1) will be headed east to Maryland! Both girls are from the Devils Garden Herd Management Area(HMA). This HMA is known for their draft influence and incredible minds (and their size!). You asked about the larger mustangs, we are bringing you some! The girls will be gentled and started (and maybe foaled out... always a gamble with the wild girls!). And will then be looking for their forever homes. ❤️

First big project of 2022! This one has been in the works for a looonnggg time! 💯 handspun yarn (mostly alpaca with some cheviot and silk) handwoven on a 7’ triangle loom. At the current proposed minimum wage, it should cost $540 in labor plus materials. Bargain priced at $150! 😂

I’m bouncing around an idea for the new year. I’m thinking about hosting a monthly horsemanship clinic. About 2 hours long with a different topic each month. We would include an unmounted lesson, pizza/snacks/drinks, and a craft or activity. Basically, I’d like to fill in the knowledge I was fortunate to have gained growing up in the 80-90’s as a barn rat. Topics could include wrapping/bandaging, boots, body scoring and conditioning, walking distances, vaccines and wormers, movement and unsoundness, different English sports, tack parts and care etc. I would also like to invite special speakers such as vets, farriers, holistic practitioners, and professional riders. I would have to charge a small fee to cover food, crafts, activities and any professional speakers. Maybe $20? Is there an interest?

We have a baby on the way for 2022! (I know, I’m crazy for even thinking about trying again and probably need some medication! 😂. But this was a stud fee we purchased 3 years ago. If anyone is looking into breeding, Avalon Farm and Hilltop have been amazing to work with.). BF Cordelia (Cor Noir), by ES Toronto.

And this big, beautiful girl is really starting to grow into herself! Can’t believe she is only 2!

Elizabeth Swan (Lizzie) was turned out this week! She had failure of passive transfer and required a plasma transfusion, so we kept her in way longer than we usually like to.

Guess who turned 1 today!!! We have had are ups and downs, and there were many days I did not think he would make it to his first birthday. Happy Birthday BHF Commander, aka Chief! We also celebrated Miss Prim’s 1st birthday (June 4th). Our little Diva is such a little love big!

Somebody has had a big 48 hrs! Flint is learning to enjoy domestic comforts. First time in a barn, in a stall, and with a fan! Today we let him out of his pen into the paddock, and he met Chief. The two of them are already stuck together and playing like only two young boys can do. I’m going to have to start a halter replacement gofundme for these two! 😂
