GF Options: They had a Cobb Salad on their dinner menu and many food options! 🥰

TL/DR: Come enjoy some Canadian food and think cold thoughts in this Texan heatwave. 🥵

Hi, hello, and welcome! If you’re new here my name is Mrs. Cantwell and I like to write about restaurants and their bathrooms. 🍽️🫶🏽🚽 Today I’m writing about my recent experience at a place called Northern D’Lights in Schertz.

This was actually my second visit, my first being at last month’s book club meeting (shout out to Katie for always picking cool places for the Reading Chicks to meet up!) ❤️📚

Most of the baked goods are wrapped and ready for take out but my muffin was unwrapped and I enjoyed it with my vanilla latte inside. They are open until 8 pm on Tuesday and Friday; Wednesday/Thursday/Saturday they close at 2pm. It just so happened that I was in the area after my 50 minute massage at 4pm and was able to get in a snack before my Costco run. 🏃🏽‍♀️Because nothing says “oh dear God a solo trip to Costco sounds like heaven right now” than when you’ve been at home with your children all week because school’s out until August (if you know, you know.) 🤪

Now on to the restrooms. There are…..2? They don’t have placards on the doors so I was directed to the one on the right and I opened it like I was on “Let’s Make a Deal” hoping there wasn’t a goat on the side of the door to greet me. No goat (unfortunately?) but it was nice and clean! I was impressed by how spotless it was in there actually, because I know this place used to be a hot dog restaurant and God only knows what those toilets have seen. 🚽

I have to say the highlight of my visit was my interaction with the cashier. I didn’t catch his name but he was wearing a Newsboy hat and had on glasses so let’s call him Newsboy Hat Man. You know that feeling when you meet someone and you just know they’re a kind person? That was the vibe Newsboy Hat Man gave me. He explained the menu, described the different bakery goods, and even said goodbye to me when I was leaving the restaurant. It was nice to be treated nicely is all I’m saying, we definitely could use more niceness in this world! 🥰

So there you have it folks, if you’ve tried the dinner or lunch specials here let me know if you liked them or not. I’m a coffee girl and the iced latte I had was the bomb dot com so I’ll definitely be a regular for the coffee alone.😍 Everything else (including the stellar customer service) was just icing on the cake.

Until we meet again, yours truly, Mrs. Cantwell 😘

05/12/2024

On this Mother’s Day, I find myself writing to you sleeping next to my beautiful little girl, who at 5 still wants to be stuck like glue to me, while also thinking of my Mother, who misses her lost sons. I’m thinking of my best friend having to say goodbye to her passing mother, and to all my friends and family that either celebrate this holiday with joy and laughter, or contempt and sadness. This message is for all of you. 💝

At its core, motherhood IS Love. Motherhood is love in all shapes and sizes. It’s love to every animal that crosses your path, and it’s love to another woman’s child that you now help raise. It’s the love of a sister, an aunt, a grandmother, a neighbor, a teacher. Motherhood is all the love and kindness given by the women that guide you throughout your life, whether it’s for a season or forever. Motherhood is the love of lessons and learning from each other. ❤️

The joy of loving and being loved in return is a powerful thing, and it’s also a gift that we must not take for granted. There are those of you that have lost your Mothers and/or lost the children that made you Mothers; and every year since, Mother’s Day is a painful reminder of that. But fear not, for they are with you. They are with you in spirit and in mind, in memory and in your thoughts. And those of you who have had a falling out, who have let arguments and resentment get the better of your relationship, I hope you fix it. I hope you find a way to see past the hurt and remember that there once was love and adoration for each other, and that you can find it again before it’s too late. ❤️‍🩹

So on this Mother’s Day, I encourage you to celebrate and spread kindness. Remember that anger and resentment are poisons we ingest wrapped in pretty little boxes given to us by a mob mentality that lives by the motto “life is pain and then you die.” But also remember, you may die alone, but you were born surrounded by love, happiness, and hope. And that everyday is a chance to make things right. Happy Mother’s Day. 🫶🏽

Until we meeting again, yours truly, Mrs. Cantwell 😘

Saturday 7 AM–8 PM
Sunday Closed
Monday 7 AM–8 PM
Tuesday 7 AM–8 PM
Wednesday 7 AM–8 PM
Breakfast offered: 7 AM–10:30 AM

GF Options: Not necessarily? Like, they have salads and veggies but they don’t have GF substitutions (if that makes sense.)

TL/DR: Go….or Don’t Go.
It’s a free country, YOLO! 🇺🇸

This past Monday I had a dental cleaning super early in the morning, so afterwards I invited my Mom out for breakfast! 🍳 Side note- is it just me, or is dental work super expensive? Like, don’t rob a bank, that’s silly. Dental offices are the places making the big $$$$ daily, just saying. Anyhoo.

I have been going to Abel’s Diner off and on for a few years now, and I’ve never had a bad meal. I only went once for lunch and the other times for breakfast so I can’t speak on their dinner menu but I’m a big fan of their Eggs Benedict! SO GOOD. And they offer a half portion which with a coffee comes up to under $15. I mean, you can’t even buy groceries anymore for under $15. I walk out of HEB $100 poorer and only holding like, 3 bags. In this economy, the meals here are a STEAL. 😍

Bathrooms are your traditional Men’s and Women’s and I can’t speak on the Men’s but if it’s anything like the women’s it’s nice! Clean with a baby changing table to boot. 🫶🏽

The TL/DR is go or don’t go because I feel like diners (to people) are either great or horrible, there’s hardly ever a middle ground, LOL. You have a great price, and you either think the food is flavored to your liking or not; and you go on your merry way. 💃🏻

What I like about Abel’s Diner is 1- it’s been around for👏🏽ev👏🏽er (where my 1991 babies at? Go get yourself an aspirin, you’re old!) and 2- it’s a locally owned business in Schertz and I love supporting local business. It’s the kind of restaurant that you’ll either comment “I remember going here as a kid” or “one and done for me.”

I will say if you go, I do hope you enjoy the causal atmosphere, the wall decor, and the friendly faces. When we went it felt like they have a lot of regulars, and I enjoyed that vibe. Too often the chains and newer places require so much prep in regards to the menu or waiting for a seat. Here, the food is hot, delicious, and I felt at home. I love it, And I hope you do too!

Until we meet again, you’re truly, Mrs. Cantwell 😘

GF: Yeah, so when I asked the cashier, she looked at me as if I made the word “gluten” up. So I’m going to go with, noooooo. But if they do, bonus! Lol 😂

TL/DR: If you blink, you’ll miss it! So don’t blink! 10/10 omgggg, I’m getting fat just typing about this place. 🥐

If you’re anything like me, pan dulce is a MUST on a Sunday morning. Add some barbacoa, and you got yourself a little ol Mexican party! 🥳 So here’s a place I recommend you visit for said sweet bread, Mayra’s bakery.

If you’re new here, hi! My name is Mrs. Cantwell and I like to write about my foodie travels with a minor in bathroom adventures. And yes, some of the bathrooms I have visited y’all, are definitely an ADVENTURE. 😬🙏🏽

This morning, my brain decided who needs extra sleep on a weekend 🤦🏻‍♀️ and woke me up at 0600. I hadn’t woken up with the intention of driving 20 miles away to get some pan dulce, but when I tell you that drive is well worth it…….it’s WELL WORTH IT! 😍

Mayra’s is the kind of bakery that if you blink, you miss it. And it’s located in a city….within a city! The address states SA, but nay nay dear readers, this little hot spot is in a magical place called…Kirby!
In Kirby, all the houses are tiny. They have a tiny police department, and tiny restaurants. If I didn’t know better, Kirby is actually filled with Lord of The Rings sized hobbits and omg can you even imagine how much fun that would be if it were true. But I digress….🧝🏽‍♀️

I can’t say I have tried every type of sweet bread they offer but I can say the ones I have tried are delicious and fresh. And I mean fresh as in, they pulled them out of the oven to go into your belly still warm, fresh. 🤤 Pan dulce bakeries are not lacking in SA of course, but not all have their ovens on site and you can tell if you’re not having fresh bread. Just trust me, you can tell. 🤫

As far as bathrooms, there are no PUBLIC bathrooms as far as I can tell. Now, did I ask to use their bathroom so I could secretly videotape how it looks and take a ridiculous selfie like I always do? No. 🙅🏻‍♀️ I don’t want to ruin my favorite pan dulce place with visions of a bathroom that’s probably as old (and worn out) as their building. 🙈
But if I had to venture a guess on how their personal bathroom looks, based off the lobby cleanliness and taste of their breads, I’m sure I’d be happy with it too. 🚽

So there you have it folks, go check out Mayra’s Bakery 7 days a week in little ol Kirby, Texas!
I mean, why not pan dulce on a Tuesday? Or Thursday? I personally only eat pan dulce on Sundays but hey, every day above ground is a blessing so go get you some of that sweet bread, y’all! 😘

Until we meet again, yours truly,
Mrs. Cantwell

Gluten Free Options: Yes! They offer their Banana Pudding in 3 GF flavors: original, strawberry, and Nutella!

Happy Valentine’s Day, Ya’ll! I hope you are celebrating with your sweeties and sugar pies all day, with lots of love and laughter like I did! 😍Speaking of sugar, my sweet tooth led my hubby and I to a new desert place called “The Peach Cobbler Factory.” Don’t let the name fool you, it’s WAY more than just cobbler. They offer puddings, cookies, Belgian waffles, brownies, and churro sticks. Yes, churro sticks! Olé! 🇲🇽

Real Talk- they literally JUST opened. Like seconds ago. Well, it was actually on February 3rd but in restaurant time that’s like……. .006 seconds. From what I’ve read, they have been understaffed and still working on their lobby decor. So when you walk in, give a little grace. We’re Texans, everything is big here, including our generosity! 🙏🏽

My hubby and I ordered the Dessert Flight (you can mix cobblers and pudding, woohoo!) and went with the Honey Apple, Peach, Blackberry, and Banana Pudding. The flight comes in little cups with an ice cream cup in the middle. The ice cream tasted like Blue Bell, or that kind of consistency? And my favorite cobbler hands down was the Honey Apple. OMGGGGGG, delicious. 🍎

Now on to my signature, the facilities. 🚽 There is no sign for the restroom, so I had to take my chances with door #1 and it did NOT open to a beach vacation to Hawaii, booooo, LOL. The room was clean, and had a LOT of literature on the walls, see picture posted below. ⬇️ I’ll have to look over the picture I took to see what exactly it was all about, but I’m pretty sure it will be very interesting reading if you ever have to use the loo and forget your phone, LOL. 🤷🏻‍♀️

All in all, I am very happy we went and look forward to all the exciting new decor and upgrades they’ll be putting up in the weeks to come. Don’t let any naysayers deter you from going at least once, you’ll never know if it’s good until you give it a try yourself! Signed, a very happy sweet tooth gal. 🦷

Until we meet again, yours truly, Mrs. Cantwell ❤️
