Warm air rises.

When we saw a cold front moving in with a threat to freeze, we also checked the wind direction/speed.

When there is practically zero wind, the cold air really settles down low (aka at tree height!) because nature isn’t mixing or moving the air.

So that’s where we come in to help the apple trees!! Using our telehandler with huge fans in the bucket, we force warm air down in an attempt to move the freezing temps more in our favor.

It worked, but somewhat!

The lower end of the orchard measured 29.5 degrees.

The top, closest to the fans and the warm air?

32 degrees!

Yes, we will have fruit! 🍎 We do anticipate, based on the growth stage, some *ugly* apples, but they will taste just as great, we assure you! 😊

Stay tuned for the end of June— we have BIG plans to prevent frost damage for years to come!!! 🤫

Well, we survived!

Our dad was up until 3am checking generators, adjusting fans to match wind direction, and making sure everything went okay. David checked in at 430 on his way to work.

The fans definitely did their job in bringing the warm air down the to trees, thereby raising the temps a few degrees! We focused most of our efforts on the Honeycrisp and Empire because they are in the “tight pink” cluster stage (AKA they are more susceptible to damage compared to later varieties like Goldrush).

We aren’t out of the clear yet! Our grow zone is not deemed frost-free until May 18. Next time we will also set up “smudge pots” (think: those fancy heaters at restaurants when you want to sit outside) and salamander heaters around the orchard to really get things warm. You know what they say about hindsight! We are living and learning as we go!! 😊

Frost alert!! 🚨

If you are a tree grower, backyard or otherwise, beware! 😬

Most apples are in the “first pink” stage. At this particular point of growth, 28 degrees = 10% kill.

At 24 degrees? 90% kill. ☠️

At any rate, we expect some loss, + potentially ugly fruit— think of it as frost bite, but on an apple. (Although, y’all know I’m a big advocate of eating ugly fruit!!! Still tastes good!!! 😊)

Tonight’s temps are rapidly dropping, predicting to hit 25-26 degrees.

If you have an old barn fan, etc, get that bad boy going!! Generating “wind” creates a little inversion effect, causing slightly warmer temps to remain near the trees (which as you can see, makes a BIG impact!).

David + his dad just got back from setting up a “breeze,” plus a thermometer so we can compare temperatures as the night progresses.

Obviously we cannot control the weather (a farmer’s daily stressor), so we are just doing what we can! Praying for all of the other orchards across CNY who are experiencing the same dip in temps. 🫶🍎

A reminder we are CLOSED for the season! Thank you all for your love & support to our orchard!

“Thanks for being here!”

…is what a sweet lady said to US (!) on Sunday as she left with a peck of apples.

She was so sweet, and I felt so moved because we feel the opposite. Thank YOU for being HERE!!

We love being a place for community + connection. What started as just “simple ole fashioned apple picking” out of necessity (we are/were just four people working full-time aside from the orchard), became something more.

If you told a friend or family member, thank you.

If you picked a peck, thank you.

If you brought a canned good for our food drive, thank you.

If you joined us for one of our mommy+me events, thank you.

If you joined us for a sunset class, thank you.

If you ignored the bees who also love the apples, thank you.

If you returned to pick apples, thank you.

If you brought a friend, thank you.

If you came out to support other local businesses we partnered with on the weekends, thank you.

If you asked questions are how/why we do what we do, thank you.

In other words, thank YOU for being HERE. We couldn’t without you, truly. It is our joy to serve you.

See you next year! 🫶🍎
