The herd came home to the ranch today. They are happy to be out of 90 degrees temps and dusty paddocks and happy to have green grass and fresh mountain water. The bulls are also happy to begin their jobs and join the ladies.

We’ve been a little absent lately due to life and all that comes with that, but our calf crop is growing like crazy and we are feeding until we have enough growth in the mountains to make it through the season. Hopefully only a couple more weeks!
We have had a crazy heifer heavy year so lots will be offered in the fall after weaning!

It has been a long 9 week journey with Django. Having to face the decision of putting him down more times than I ever want to deal with again.

On Oct 11th he got a nasty deep cut on his hind hoch. It quickly became infected days after his initial treatment and required surgery at . We thought the chances were good enough for this 7 year old to give it a chance. It has been a long recovery and it would not have been possible without the amazing care and oversight of my dear friend at Redtail Farm and our wonderful vet team.

He is finally home and got to see his buddies before settling into his new outdoor pen. The healing journey is still no where close to being over, but glad we are still continuing. We have learned Django is not a fan of being a barn/stall horse.

These sunsets have been gorgeous lately. Never does it justice.

Why Speckle Park Cattle?

It isn't just about spots on the hide, it is a registered breed. They have a baseline heritage of Aberdeen Angus, Teeswater Shorthorn and White Park.

This particular breed does great in drought situations with needing less input to create higher outputs, i.e. they need less feed to gain/sustain.

Medium framed cattle, the goldilocks size breed in my opinion.

Their temperament is truly hard to beat. They work quietly and are generally very docile. I work our herd most of the time by myself as a a first gen female rancher and it's generally a cake walk.

Genetics are being focused on to create the best animals possible. Being a relatively newer breed, focus has been placed to really improve milk production as well as beef marbling.

They are pretty, tired of seeing just black and red cows around? They add a new flair, if only hide tanning was more accessible.

Ask to learn more!

It’s been a week of field trips. We attended a event in Eckert on Tuesday to talk about drought resiliency. It was a great event and always great to connect with new people.

Thursday I went to Gunnison to a event highlighting automated tarp irrigation. This is a system that could drastically lower labor time and flexibility to set a set for a certain amount of time before moving to the next without having to go change it. A pretty cool system that I hope to maybe put into use.

Foxtail is a w**d that is my nemesis. There is not an effective way of getting rid of it, so the best way I have found is to hand cut it before it can spread its seed. Every year before our hay harvest I take a bucket out and hand trim as much as I can.

I am going to try to essentially compost it in the garbage bag and take the liquid that is created and see if it works as an herbicide. A technique Nicole Masters mentioned in a talk.
