Feedworks USA had a great time at the Dairy Calf & Heifer Association Annual Conference last week.

From sponsoring the event to participating in many meetings, we learned a lot, shared a lot, and enjoyed connecting with calf and heifer raisers. Our very own Minnie Ward was especially busy, serving on the committee that revised the Gold Standards for Calf Rearing and helping implement a new Beef on Dairy section. We are thrilled to introduce Avery Ziegler as this year’s Pamela J. Byrd Memorial Scholarship recipient. Avery, a Junior at Kansas State University, was selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants for the scholarship, which was established to support students pursuing careers in animal science while honoring Pamela Byrd, the late wife of Feedworks USA partner Tim Byrd.

“Avery embodies Pamela’s spirit of growth and service,” says Tim. “Her passion for helping others and her dedication to her goals reminds me of the same intentionality that Pamela showed throughout her life. Avery is someone who will carry that legacy forward.”

Growing up in northwest Kansas, Avery developed a deep connection to agriculture and a vision for her future. She is currently pursuing an Animal Science degree at Kansas State University and has already been admitted early into the College of Veterinary Medicine, where she will begin this fall while continuing her undergraduate studies. Her long-term goal is to serve as a mixed-animal veterinarian in rural communities, addressing a critical need while strengthening both animal health and local livelihoods.

Avery’s commitment to her future is evident not only in her academic success, but also in her leadership and service. She serves as an Undergraduate Mentor in the Department of Animal Science, Treasurer of the Pre-Veterinary Society, and volunteers her time with veterinary clinics and animal shelters. Her involvement extends beyond campus as well, with a focus on community service, mentorship, and outreach.

When asked about receiving the scholarship, Avery said, “Grateful is an understatement. I am honored to represent Pamela’s legacy and to use this support to continue growing into my future veterinary career.” Reflecting on the moment she found out, she added, “I was honestly fighting back tears! There’s no better feeling than realizing you’re one step closer to your dreams because of someone else’s generosity and kindness.”

The scholarship selection committee included Tim Byrd, Benjamin Wenner, and Rebecca Culbertson of Feedworks USA, along with Pamela’s daughter, Jennifer Aleman.

We are pleased to support Avery as she continues her journey and look forward to the impact she will make in the world. Her dedication, compassion, and drive set an incredible example, and we are proud to have her receive the Pamela J. Byrd Memorial Scholarship.
