Tomac Marany 2020

The Tomac family has always listened to the earth. The family’s amphitheater-sloped vineyards are located in the rolling hills of Plešivica, southwest of Zagreb in the center of Croatia. While they have been making wine in this area for over a century, it was only in 2018 that owner Tomislav decided to actively begin applying biodynamic agriculture to their nine hectares under vine. And he states it was “definitely the best decision we’ve ever made.” This kind of attention to the land comes through in this earthy skin-contact wine. There are notes of sliced pear up front on the nose. Then on the palate, it has a distinct Cognac-like characteristic, with notes of caramel and cumin in the background. The palate is dry and balanced with mild fruit and great acidity.

“Reserve de la Saurine grenache blanc

Wise Guys Lounge and Grill owner Tom Procaccio is always serving up interesting wines by the glass. The other week it was a delicious white Bordeaux from France. Last week I had an $8 glass of Reserve de la Saurine grenache blanc.

This crisp white wine from the France’s Languedoc region is brand new to the area, and the North Hill dining spot was one of the first to get it in. It was a hit from the first sip. Loved the floral notes in the glass.

It was the perfect accompaniment with an order of Wise Guys house-made crab Rangoons. The olive oil and lemon vinaigrette on my Greek salad really brought out the citrus notes of the wine.
By the time you and your date each order an $8 glass, you might as well purchase the whole bottle for $20. You can always take home whatever wine you don’t finish. “
