Speak softly. 🥃..and carry a big stick.

That’s Teddy Roosevelt’s line, and at The Roosevelt Room - Rookwood | Cocktail Bar it’s also two cocktails sitting side by side on the menu — the Speak Softly, and this one, The Big Stick. Read the menu top to bottom and the phrase reads itself.

The Big Stick is their smoked Manhattan: mezcal rinse inside the glass, a hickory chip torched and left to smoke underneath, then Old Forester bourbon, Carpano Antica, and wh***ey bitters, stirred and poured over a BIG ICE cube with the Roosevelt R carved in. The smoked chip stays in the glass and keeps working.

Some drinks are a three-minute single. This one’s a twenty-minute jam. 🌹

The Ramblin’ Rose at Rosedale OTR | Patio Bar : Old Forester, lime, black raspberry purée, over a rose carved out of crystal-clear BIG ICE, topped with Sprite.

It’s not a riff on any classic. It just goes where it wants: sweet blackberry, bright lime, a little fizz, bourbon hanging back in the mix. Popsicle energy in a rocks glass.

Up in Smoke at The Lackman | OTR B**r & Bourbon Bar

Rey Supremo Blanco tequila, Illegal Mezcal, Aperol, fresh grapefruit juice, and a touch of simple syrup — shaken, poured over BIG ICE, finished with an orchid.

The classic Paloma is grapefruit and tequila, bright and easy. This one keeps all of that and adds two things: mezcal for a low curl of smoke, and Aperol for bittersweet citrus underneath.

Same refreshing bones, more to think about.

Smokestack at Beeline - Newport on the Levee | Ales & Spirits 🍊

“Mezcal is tequila’s sassy sister. She’s smoky, she’s delicious.”

That’s the whole idea behind the Smokestack: El Jimador Reposado as the base, Solerno, blood orange, lime, and agave shaken together, poured over crystal-clear BIG ICE, then finished with a mist of Del Maguey Vida mezcal on top. Black sea salt rim. Dehydrated lime.

The mezcal spritz is the move. It’s not stirred in — it sits on top, so you get the smoke on the nose and the first sip without it taking over the drink. If you’ve always thought mezcal was too much, this is how you ease in.

Blood orange margarita with a smoke signal. Best enjoyed on the Levee with the skyline doing its thing.

Sunlit Afternoon at Pilar | Cincinnati Daiquiri and Rum Bar 🍋

Key West in a rocks glass — which makes perfect sense, since Pilar was the name of Hemingway’s fishing boat, and Key West is where he sailed her.

The build: Rey Supremo Rosa tequila, Giffard rhubarb liqueur, guava nectar, pineapple juice, strawberry-mint syrup, and Bittermens Burlesque bitters to keep it saucy. Tajín rim. Lemon squeezed over the top and dropped in.

The whole point, straight from behind the bar: make a tequila drink for people who don’t like tequila, and throw together flavors nobody would expect to work.

Rhubarb and guava and strawberry-mint shouldn’t get along. They absolutely do.

The Pomegranate Margarita at Doc Crow's : Lalo Blanco tequila, triple sec, lemon and lime juice, and pomegranate for a little extra sweetness. Shaken and poured over a crystal-clear BIG ICE sphere, garnished with lime.

Officially classified by the bartender as “a poolside patio pounder” — which is exactly the energy we’re bringing into the back half of August.

Girl in the Bubble at Killer Queen - Cincinnati | Bar & Pizza 👑🫧

‘90s babies, this one’s for you.

House-infused Hubba Bubba bubblegum Tito’s — yes, actual bubblegum, actually infused — with lime juice, simple syrup, egg white, and a quarter ounce of grenadine for the pop. Shaken until it’s silky, then crowned with a BIG ICE cube stamped with their signature crown, floating right on top of the foam.

It’s pink. It’s nostalgic. It tastes like the first three chews of a fresh piece of gum.
