Why Hereford?

Because at the end of the day, a good cow pays the bills.

We've always believed the backbone of any operation is the mama cow, and Hereford females have earned their place on our ranch.

They're the kind that calve easy, mother hard, breed back, and stay in the herd for years. They don't need a lot of pampering, they just go to work. That's the kind of cow that keeps a ranch profitable.

And when it comes to crossbreeding, Herefords flat get the job done. The added heterosis brings more fertility, more longevity, and more pounds in the pasture, while producing those black baldy females that have become known as some of the best mama cows in the business.

There are a lot of good breeds out there, but we've hitched our wagon to Herefords because they consistently do what matters most, raise a good calf, stay productive, and make commercial cattlemen money.

At B&D, we don't raise Herefords simply because it's tradition, we raise them because they consistently deliver value.

That's why we choose Hereford.

We’re soaking up days like yesterday while we can… because Mother Nature says the temperature is going to rise faster than the cattle market next week.

The cattle are enjoying the cool breeze, green grass, and a little break before summer really turns up the heat.

Why is our brand Lazy J V when we are B&D? Great question!

Both the ranch name and the brand trace back to our founders, Jerry Beran and Vincent Dolechek. When Jerry and Vince first started running cattle together in the commercial cattle business, they needed a brand. They naturally chose the first initial of each of their first names - J and V.

Jerry always joked that he was the “lazy” one, while Vince was the one holding him (and the whole operation) up. 😄 Hence, Lazy J V was born.

Later, when they transitioned into the registered cattle business and officially named the ranch, they both agreed that B&D had a better ring to it than J&V. Different names, same partnership.

A little history, a lot of legacy and a brand that still tells our story today.

There’s one more introduction, or rather reintroduction, we need to make.

As we mentioned in our last post, B&D wouldn't be where it is today without the vision, hard work, and dedication of our founders, Jerry Beran and Vince Dolechek. Together, they built this operation from the ground up and established the values that continue to guide us every day.

We sadly lost Jerry in 2015, but we're incredibly fortunate to still have Vince with us. His knowledge, wisdom, and stories continue to shape our family and our ranch, and we're thankful he's still a part of the day-to-day life at B&D.

While technically retired, Vince still gets out to check and feed cattle. In fact, the most spoiled Herefords on the place are probably the ones that get to live at his house. During his years on the ranch, you could usually find Vince building or repairing facilities and equipment. If it needed welded, he was your guy.

Vince is married to Alice (Beran, yes, Jerry's sister). Most Sunday mornings, you'll find Vince and Alice in the front pew at church in Odin. Vince recently joked that he goes so often now to make up for all the times he missed while farming and ranching. They also rarely miss a family gathering, and if we're lucky, Vince shows up with his famous margaritas.

While the faces and generations have changed over the years, the commitment to quality cattle, hard work, and family has never wavered. Everything we do today is built on the legacy Jerry and Vince created.

It takes a lot of great people to keep this place running, and we're proud to carry on the legacy they started as part of the B&D family.

While we haven't been around for 250 years, we have been in the cattle business for roughly 69 years...

We wouldn’t be who we are today without honoring where we came from. Family has always been at the heart of our operation, so it’s no surprise that this ranch was founded by the brothers’ father and uncle.

Jerry Beran and Vincent Dolechek, double brothers-in-law after marrying each other’s sisters, went into the cattle business together in 1957. They began with a commercial operation, experimenting with different breeds and management styles over the years. Eventually, they found their footing with Horned Herefords and made the move into the registered industry in 1969.

The Angus herd was added later by the brothers, and over time everything was merged into one operation, what you know today as B&D Herefords and Angus.

Our foundation is built on family, hard work, and a willingness to adapt, and those values continue to guide us today.
