Tis the season! Today we hit the highest temperature of 2026 so far, peaking at 94F in the afternoon. The room we grow our pink & golden oysters in has much less air conditioning than our other grow rooms, and has been hanging around in the mid 70s as the summer heat has started to set in. These mushrooms will definitely grow in colder temperatures but they really enjoy a warmer environment if you can provide it for them!

Kings have always been one of my favorites to grow. This classic specialty shroom commands a bit more attention and care than its cousins in the Pleurotus family. But with great effort comes great reward. Weeks turn into months that roll into years & although we sometimes don’t notice the small, incremental improvements… consistency builds over time. This is the way!

Standing on the shoulders of giants… take a step back and you’ll notice we all are!

Thank you to all the great mushroom cultivators who have shared their techniques, processes, and methods with the world to help advance the growth of this industry. It amazes me just how accessible information about mushroom cultivation has become over the last 5 years or so. If we turn the clock back just 10 years, many of us were operating in the “dark ages” where there was such a small community online. There were no Facebook groups or podcasts, and YouTube pickins were slim to none. What we did have was a handful of outdated books from even darker ages & an archaic message board for sharing information. Flash forward to today and notice we’re on an information super highway. This has sped up the process of learning to an incredible pace.

Just having the opportunity to be so connected with all of you is something too easy to take for granted. So thank you too for sharing your journeys and experiences! No matter how small or big our boats may be, each one contributing to the collective is a small step that helps advance a movement.

As we are reaching the end of winter we’re saying goodbye to snow oyster for a little while, and getting ready to start jamming pink oysters into the grow rooms for the spring and summer. Rotating seasonal oysters is a great way for us to take advantage of the changes in weather so we don’t have to make drastic adjustments to temperature all throughout the year to keep specific mushrooms happy.

This past fall we put out an APB looking for a new white oyster to bring in for the winter, and traded cultures with a few folks who reached out about it. This particular one came from all the way from France & has made its way into our library for long term storage to bring back out next winter! Thanks to everyone who responded and offered to swap, the myco community is a great place to be!

Chestnuts, blues, and manes are the production mushrooms we run the most of. These varieties soak up more than half of our weekly block production and as we keep growing as a business, that trend seems to be continuing! Every spring we ramp up from how much we were growing the year before, testing our region’s hunger for the fungus — which makes for an exciting but also stressful time of the year!
