This is catastrophic! 🥲🐝
I post articles, like this, hoping to educate people, on what a crisis this is. Bees are SO MUCH more, than honey! They’re our life!

💕GRATITUDE 💕
To all who contributed jars, to this craziness! At this point, in my life, I’m no longer collecting…
Until next time, of course! lol

Here’s what we do, to get our honey from hive, to cute jar!

What Goes Into Harvesting Honey

1. Inspect the hive
* Open the hive and carefully inspect the colonies.
* Determine which honey supers/frames are actually ready to harvest.
* Honey should generally be ripe and capped, meaning the bees have reduced its moisture sufficiently for storage.
2. Remove the honey-filled frames
* Each frame can be surprisingly heavy—often 5–7 pounds when full.
* The beekeeper has to remove the frames without excessively disturbing the bees.
* Bees are gently brushed or otherwise cleared from the frames.
3. Transport the supers
* Full honey boxes are heavy and awkward to carry.
* They need to be moved somewhere clean and bee-free for extraction.
4. Uncap every frame
* Bees seal mature honey cells with a thin layer of beeswax.
* The beekeeper removes that wax using an uncapping knife, fork, or heated uncapping tool.
* This is one of the most tedious parts because you’re working over thousands of individual honey cells.
5. Extract the honey
* Frames go into a honey extractor, which spins them using centrifugal force.
* The honey flies out of the cells and runs down the inside of the extractor.
6. Strain
* Freshly extracted honey contains bits of wax, pollen and other debris.
* It’s strained to produce clean honey while generally preserving the honey’s natural character.
7. Let it settle
* The honey may be allowed to sit so tiny bubbles and remaining particles rise to the surface.
8. Bottle it
* Honey is transferred into sanitized jars.
* Then come the lids, labels, weights, dates, and all the other little details that make those beautiful finished jars.
9. Clean EVERYTHING!
* This may be the worst part. 😂
* Honey gets everywhere—on equipment, floors, tables, hands, clothing and anything nearby.
* And because honey is so sticky, cleanup can take a considerable amount of time.

🍯 And there’s another important job…

A responsible beekeeper also has to make sure the bees are left with enough food for themselves. You don’t simply take every bit of honey from a colony. The amount available for harvest depends on the strength of the colony, season, location, nectar flow and expected forage ahead.

So when someone buys a jar of local honey, they’re not just buying something the bees made—they’re buying hours of work, equipment, careful hive management, and a whole lot of sticky cleanup.
