Do I hate zinnias?

Yes and no…

Let me explain. If you watch our YT channel you’ve heard me complain for years about zinnias and I stand by those complaints. In a nutshell, zinnias are a huge pain to grow at a commercial level. To get the high standard of quality we require on our farm, they take a lot of work. Growing is high maintenance, harvesting properly is slower, and their vase life is often a gamble. I don’t like any of that experience as a flower farmer. Oh and they don’t actually cost pennies to grow like you might assume by seeing $5 arrangements with zinnias. They are way more expensive than that to grow properly. 🫣

But paradoxically zinnias are a fantastic garden flower and a wonderful choice for beginners that simply want some blooms in their backyard. Zinnias can be direct sown and provide lovely stems for you most of the summer. I still grow zinnias in our private gardens for that exact reason. They are bright cheery fun.

However, zinnias ultimately got dropped from our * farm * growing list. Therefore if you see me posting pictures of zinnias they are either old photos or photos from our personal garden, not farm. No need to keep asking me if we grow them anymore 😉

If you are a hobby gardener, grab some zinnia seeds and try them out! If you are a flower farmer, consider dropping them because they are a nightmare. What a wonderful contradiction the zinnia flower is 😂

PS don’t argue with me about zinnias in the comments. I’ve made my choices in life 😅 (hint: there are legit reasons many successful farms drop them, I’m not weird here)

Wowza did we get a LOUD thunderstorm all night. Absolutely much needed rain but I could have done without the thunder for the babies 😅

Does anyone read email anymore?

I am on the fence about emails. Currently it feels like my inbox is just constantly filled with sales emails or spam. No matter how many times I unsubscribe from things, I accumulate new emails.

On the other hand, there isn’t really another reliable way to communicate with people that is not beholden to a complicated and manipulated algorithm outside my control.

These are my deep thoughts today…thinking about the future of email communication.

Continuing my complaint about social media…

I hate how Facebook added the anonymous function for posts and comments. Makes this platform feel like a Reddit thread now.

No, I will not respond to Bubblesnog4367

Y’all gave us so many follows yesterday after our social media post…it is nice to see that quite a few of you agree with our stance on the endless rat race 😅 if you haven’t followed us and you want to see non trendy click bait, our page is for you 💕

I miss old social media…

Remember the days when you could post a picture, and people would actually see it, and you could scroll and see other great pictures. Your feed was largely chronological and you actually read people’s captions…

Now everything is algorithm based designed to keep your gnat like attention span captivated and entertained. It’s flashy, tacky, and dramatic. Nothing is simple, calm, or endearing. It’s manipulated bait.

I have slowly grown our flower farm business over these last 5 years by showing up daily with beautiful pictures and (hopefully) interesting captions to share with you. what’s going on at the farm, plans for the future, flowers for sale in season, and educational info to help you grow your own blooms.

But there is only so much I can grow followers wise with that model because I simply refuse to be a circus act.

I refuse to dance like a monkey to get your attention. Or post click bait titles and headlines which are ultimately dishonest. Or even spend hours making reels.

Instead I prefer to just consistently show up each day and share something about the farm and fill your feed with a photo to enjoy. And in season, to spread the word about our gorgeous locally grown flowers.

Yes, I could become an “influencer” if I played by the rules. But I don’t want to live in that world and I don’t want my kids to inherit a world that is just flash consumption. I want something more meaningful.

So I will not be doing the latest trend. But thank you for being here 💜
