Clarendon College RFO • Ranch & Feedlot Operations Preserving the heritage we hold dear, while advancing the future of agriculture by educating and equipping tomorrow’s stewards.

The Ranch and Feedlot Operations Program (RFO) at Clarendon College has a rich history, dating back to 1974. We believe in tradition and preserving our heritage, while also recognizing the need to adapt and implement new technology and production methods, to ensure a strong future. The RFO program helps equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to face complex issues - with the ultima

te goal of leading the change, and advancing the agricultural industry. Clarendon College is located in the heart of the Texas Panhandle, and because of our close proximity, the RFO class is able to take field trips and tour some of the best ranch and feedlot facilities in the country – many of which are run by alumni of the program. We are also fortunate to welcome industry leaders into the classroom and provide our students with incredible insight and networking opportunities throughout the year. We believe college should be affordable and degrees should be attainable. Tuition is low, but the value of this program is high. Tye Chesser • Program Director, Instructor

Thank you Beaver County Stockyards, Jeff, and Layne for making time for the class on a sale day. If you are looking for a place to market your cattle, give them a shot at it, you won’t be disappointed. While we were there I saw Jeff stop the sale because there was a draft of calves that sold, but it wasn’t the complete set. He had them bring them back around and sold them as the full set. He said, “I’m here for the seller, not the buyers!”

We proactively seek opportunities for students to interact with local leaders and cultivate their professional presence. Texas State Senator Charles Perry's town hall on campus offered an outstanding opportunity for precisely that. Students were able to pose questions and acquire valuable insights on issues affecting those of us in agriculture.

It has been a busy couple of weeks for the RFO students. We have had the opportunity to visit the crew at MobileVeterinary Practice and assist with several procedures. Later that day, we participated in the Texas Cattle Feeders Association fed Beef Showcase, hosted by West Texas A&M University Ag Departement. Thank you to both for always putting on a first class event

We then traveled to the Taylor Ranch on Tuesday, where we spent the day learning about their use of genomics and selective matings to achieve a superior beef animal. While at the Taylor Ranch, several of the students were able to participate in a live radio broadcast with the host Jimmy Clark. (The link to the interview will be linked in the comments.)

On Wednesday, we spent the day back on campus and heard from Blake Vineyard, the West Texas Deputy Director for Senator Ted Cruz, about various topics being handled legislatively.

On Thursday, we traveled to Shamrock, Texas, and toured Great Plains Breeders Services, where students learned about collecting bulls and seeing the process from collection through freezing.

Here you go, moms! In case you didn't get a first day of school picture, we tried to get them to smile for you!
