UPDATE - All the hay bales have been move here from Rodney's barn. It's covered since it was under roof over there. About half is under plastic & half under an actual roof. Feeling blessed in being able to get enough hay to feed through this Winter. Have been feeding hay for weeks now due to the drought.

Hay getting covered just ahead of this afternoon's rain.
What we will do to feed livestock through the Winter AND Summer-Fall this year! These under the plastic are 4x5' roles. My tractor can handle the weight, just not stacking any higher. These larger bales came out of this barn (see pics) so must be kept as dry as possible; dry bales make great sponges which would spoil the hay quickly. Many more bales will join the row. The bales seen behind these plastic covered are 4x4' that have been out in the weather for at least a few months already.

Cheesy Thursdays - a little peak into the hours long process.

We make cheese on Thursdays. Raw milk aged cheese - 4 kinds: Cheddar, Gouda, Havarti & Swiss. Here are a few pictures of very fresh curd in molds being placed in the press. There are many steps which are not shown here. The mass of curd looks rough then gets smooth with pressing. The stainless steel vat has a water jacket where hot water will transfer its heat to the milk. The hydraulic press is first used to level off the curd mass in the plastic mold then there's an actual time period under pressure to push out excess whey. There is a home-made press for individual wheels or groups that use steel bar bell weights for pressure. The new wheels are flipped and pressed further in either method.

This year 5 out of 5 are heifers! Way better than some previous years with 90% bull calves...
