There is no other natural resource that offers the same environmental, agricultural, and economic potential as h**p, and with the legalization of cannabis in New York State, we now have an opportunity to unleash the power of this commodity in a way that delivers real financial opportunities for our farmers, allows new entrepreneurial ventures to flourish, and helps us meet our climate mitigation goals. A win-win-win in every sense.

Industrialized h**p is the future of manufacturing, and I’ve authored legislation (S7508) that will establish New York as a national leader in the growth and production of h**p-based packaging for cannabis while kickstarting the industry at large in New York State.

Patagonia, Allbirds, Timberland, Mara Hoffman, Christy Dawn, and luxury conglomerate Kering (Gucci, Balenciaga) are among a growing list of fashion companies investing in regenerative agriculture, which uses more sustainable farming methods that can reverse climate change, increase biodiversity, and improve soil health.

For most of history, making garments was a long, expensive process that was intimately tied to farming, which grew the fibers for cloth. But over the last hundred years, industrial farming has changed the game. Today, farmers around the world use modern techniques such as pesticides, irrigation systems, and monocropping (planting a single crop such as cotton) to increase their yields. They then sell their crops to middlemen, who bundle the materials together and sell them on the commodity market to mills. “Brands and consumers are now completely detached from the source of their clothing

All of this has come at an enormous cost to the planet. Experts estimate that big agriculture is responsible for roughly 30% of global carbon emissions, 70% of freshwater use, and 60% of the loss of biodiversity. And the planet’s agricultural land has become so depleted that the United Nations predicts that there are about 60 growing seasons left until the world’s soil will no longer grow crops.

Regenerative agriculture is designed to reverse this damage. The concept emerged in the 1970s with pioneers such as Robert Rodale. He founded the Rodale Institute to study and implement practices that would rejuvenate the land, including cutting out pesticides, since they kill the microorganisms in the soil that keep it healthy. Regenerative farming builds on these ideas, through growing cover crops, planting multiple types of crops together, rotating crops, and reducing tilling.

Regenerative agriculture could help mitigate fashion’s destructive force on the planet. But can it move beyond a buzzword?

Our Story

Located on a ridge in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, we purchased an overgrown pasture that was lacking love and attention in the winter of 2016. Since then, we have worked hard to revitalize and transform unused, abandoned historic farmland- companied with double mountain views- back into a flourishing, sustainable farm operation.

We strive to farm in a way that will allow our land to be farmed for generations forward, and our 2 children play a huge role in that dream. We wish to encourage healthier choices for the people in our community at affordable prices. We believe that organic does not need to mean expensive. We will be offering CSA shares, and direct purchases of pastured poultry, including Thanksgiving turkeys, pasture/wood foraged heritage pork, and organically grown fruit and vegetables. We also will be offering Shagbark Hickory Syrup as well as other naturally resourced products.

Since 1995, the number of independent organic food processing companies plummeted from 81% to 15%. Meanwhile, the organic industry grows 10% annually. The result is that most of the “organic” food available on grocery store shelves is produced by a small group of large corporations. Mega corporations with organic brands use their profits for lobbying influence to push agendas that directly conflict with the good food movement.

By eating local and supporting small farmers like us, you are helping not only your community, but helping to stand against genetically modified organisms ( GMOs) which have been proven time and time again to have horrible health effects on our bodies. We are competing with big business on a small scale level. We are not competing with other farmers. Because we the people are in this fight for change together.
