We’re not quite done calving yet, but there were 38 babies born in 27 days in April. Trickling in with the remaining few now.
For the first time I can ever remember, I didn’t get a single calf tagged until over a month after the first ones were born. April just had too many other things competing for my time!
Well yesterday we made out tags and got them caught up. Some calves went to other farms as bottle babies, but these 11 heifers are our future milking herd replacements. As you can see, we’ve got a few fruits in the bunch. Hopefully that means they’re just sweet and not crazy😏. Didn’t have the boys’ tags made out yet for the photo.
Also, do not recommend waiting a month to tag, as the bigger they are, the more damage they can do when trying to confine them for their “ear piercing”. We decided to run them through the chute in the barn. Unfortunately the head gate wasn’t latched properly for the first one and when he tried to lunge through the opening he took the whole gate with him and the metal lever that closes the opening slammed pretty forcefully into the side of my head. Pretty sure I have a mild concussion which necessitates me slowing down a bit for a few days 🤕. Thankful for those who are lightening my load this week! Not thankful for Chief’s escape attempts 😌
