What does it take to sink a lemon boat?

Try this experiment at home with household items such as pennies, paperclips, grapes, marshmallows, beads, etc. Guess how many of each item it will take to sink the lemon boat!

In our experiment, to sink the lemon boat, it took:
πŸ‹ 18 pennies
πŸ‹ 11 grapes
πŸ‹ Marshmallows.... unsinkable! We fit 40 marshmallows in the boat and ran out of room for anymore.

Lots of beautiful green leaves out right now. Here are 3 fun and easy leaf activities for kids. It's a great way to explore the nuances of leaves! 🌿

1. Leaf Matching: Trace the outline of different leaves on a piece of paper. Find the leaf that fits inside the outline.
2. Leaf Shape Scavenger Hunt: Draw different leaf shapes on a piece of paper and let kids go look for leaves that match the shapes.
3. Leaf Puzzle: Cut leaves in half and let kids match the halves together.

It often seems like the things you are most excited for take the longest!

Our Atlantic Giant pumpkin seeds finally sprouted (2 of 4), twelve days after we planted them. Maybe they were just concentrating on building a robust root system. πŸ˜‰

It's hard for kids (and adults! πŸ˜‚) to wait for seeds to sprout. To keep kids interested and curious about seed germination, try using a germination tracker.

One of our germination trackers is filling in water drops. For every day you do not see a sprout, color one of the water drops, or place a seed in one of the water drops. πŸ’¦

When the seedling pops out of the soil, count the number of covered water drops and that is the number of days it took for the seed to germinate.

How do you count the days to germination? Would love to hear what you do!

These two pumpkin seeds are relatively equal in size, but they will produce drastically different sized pumpkins!

The seed on the left is the Sugar Pie pumpkin seed, producing pumpkins that average 7 pounds. The seed on the right is the Atlantic Giant pumpkin seed, producing pumpkins that are on average 400-500 pounds (though some expert growers can get 1,000 pounds and more!).

Seeds are amazing! ❀️

Lemon prints! Made these cute little gift tags to accompany lemon bars. It's a fun and easy art project for all ages!
We cut one small lemon in half then scooped out the insides of the lemon while keeping the natural section dividers (those make the cool inside lines). We picked out two shades of yellow and stamped one lemon half in each color.

We found a little fairy egg in our chicken coop!

A fairy egg is a tiny egg with no yolk (still totally edible!).

Since this egg came from our hen, Abigail Tail feathers (5 years old), it could mean her hormone production is winding down or it is the result of stress or a disruption of routine.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 🌍

Send a little love to Earth today (and everyday!) by doing simple things such as recycling, reusing items, turning off lights in your home when they are not needed, and planting flowers (such as sunflowers) that feed pollinators like bees.

One of our favorite seed starters this season is the loofah sponge. This is the first time we have tried it. We tried really hard to clean out all the loofah seeds, but a few remained and actually sprouted along with the sunflower seeds that we planted. It's been fun to watch all the seedlings pop up. It's also great that the bottom of the loofah sponges have holes. The roots can just keep growing (and not get rootbound) it's a helpful sign to us that it's time to move them to the garden!

One of our favorite science projects is watching a seed germinate. With the use of a plastic cup, you get a "underground" look at what happens when you put a seed in the ground.

These photos show green bean seeds germinating. To do this project at home, put a damp, folded paper towel around the inside circle of the cup then fill the middle with torn cotton balls. Put seeds in, between the cup and the paper towel. Lightly water daily, and be careful to not overwater as this will cause the seeds to rot. Place in spot that gets indirect light such as a windowsill. Watch the magic happen!!πŸͺ„

The supplies to do this experiment are also included in our Plant & Play Kit for Kids! Visit our online store to see all the contents.

Seed Starter #5: toilet paper rolls!

Toilet paper had quite the year in 2020 and if you have extra rolls on hand, save the cardboard roll to make seed starters.

To make: measure 1 inch up from the bottom of the roll and make 5 equidistant dash marks. Using scissors, make a straight cut up to the dash line to make 5 panels. Fold the panels in over each other to make the bottom of the seed starter pot. Fill with soil and plant! This seed starter can go directly into the garden when the seedlings are ready!

Seed Starter#4: Loofah sponges

This is a fun, unique use for gardeners who grow loofahs! Loofahs make wonderful sponges and they can also be peeled, cut, emptied of seeds, filled with dirt, and planted with seeds to make seed starters.

We planted sunflower seeds in these, and also left one section with the loofah seeds that were in it. We'll see how it goes!

Check out our Instagram feed for homemade seed starters #1, #2, and#3.

Homemade Seed Starter #3: Use newspaper strips to make seed pots.

This handy Pot Maker makes it easy to turn newspaper strips into seed starter pots!

You don't need the Pot Maker to make the pots though! Cut newspaper into 5" height strips and roll it around a spray can (such as a PAM vegetable spray) with 2" hanging over the bottom. Fold the bottom 2" into the can to form the bottom of the seed starter pot.

*Avoid using shiny color print newspaper which is toxic.

Homemade Seed Starter #2: Lemon and orange rinds.

If you're ready to plant and want to get your seeds started indoors, save your citrus fruit rinds to plant in! Simply cut the lemon or orange in half, scoop out the fruit, add a drainage hole at the bottom, then fill with soil and plant your seeds. When your seedlings are ready to transplant, put the whole citrus shell in the soil. The citrus peels will compost into the soil.

Who's ready to plant seeds?

Over the next week, we will be featuring some easy homemade seed starter pots that you can use to get your seeds started indoors.

The benefits of starting seeds in seed starter pots are:
*If you live in a cold region, you can start your plants earlier to have an earlier harvest
*You can control the germination conditions (temperature, moisture, wind, sunlight).
*Generally a higher percentage of seeds will germinate and come up faster than planting outdoors.
*You get to be close to your plants and look at them all day long! 😁

Seed starter #1: Save an egg carton and plant directly in the egg crevices or plant into the egg shells. These can go directly into the soil when your seedlings are ready to move to the garden. Be sure to poke two water holes in the egg shells for drainage. We gently poked holes using a toothpick.

What is going to be in your garden this year? Trying anything new? What are your tried and true favorites?

We'll be planting our usual favorites: tomatoes, sweet corn, sunflowers, pumpkins, zucchini, and beets.
Going to try peas and green beans (haven't done these in many years!) and some new types of branching sunflowers (Shock O Lat, Lemon Aura, Valentine, and Soraya).

Planting a garden! Here's another fun activity for those kids who can't wait to plant!
We printed out clip art images of garden vegetables and fruits and taped them to popsicle sticks. Then we cut a line in the middle of each egg spot on the bottom of an egg carton. Kids can push the popsicle stick down through the hole.
You can also print out another set of images to use as a matching game, or organize the fruits and vegetables by colors.
