Reedy's Work Skills Reedy's Work Skills (RWS) is a day program for adults with developmental disabilities. We have developed a number of programs to accomplish this goal.

RWS is a day program designed to help integrate adults with developmental disabilities into the community. This is done primarily by teaching work skills so that individuals can enjoy the satisfaction of a day’s work. First, we have contracts in the community to perform various types of work. We want everyone to have an opportunity to participate in these jobs. RWS provides staff, vehicles and equipment. All monies earned are divided amongst the participating clients. Clients are rated on time spent working, effort, attitude and performance. Checks are issued to participating students every two weeks. Second, we have workshops at the location we refer to as Plaza House. Here students learn to cook, garden and improve reading and math skills. Third, we have raw land that we refer to as the Ranch. Here we are developing larger gardens.

RWS is Looking for Community Partners!

Reedy’s Work Skills is looking for local businesses, professionals, tradespeople, and hobbyists willing to share what they do with the individuals we support.

We’re seeking opportunities for clients to visit, observe, shadow, ask questions, and get hands-on exposure to different careers, trades, and hobbies they may be interested in exploring.

Current interests include automotive and mechanics, maintenance, landscaping and gardening, agriculture, cooking and food service, retail, animal care, technology and computers, art, painting, writing, video gaming, music, bike repair, upholstery, salons, tattoo and piercing, coffee shops, hospitality, office work, and more.

You don’t have to own a business or be an expert. If you have a skill, hobby, trade, profession, or workplace you’d be willing to introduce someone to, we’d love to hear from you.

These experiences can be as simple as a tour, demonstration, conversation, or a few hours of job shadowing.

Adrian has always dreamed of working on cars.

He grew up helping his dad in the driveway. He loved the engines, the tires, the tools, the smell of gas and brakes.

For a long time, though, Adrian didn't believe it was possible for him.

The truth was, beside helping his dad, he had never really been given the opportunity.

Adrian's love of cars was eventually channeled into washing and detailing them. He enjoyed the work and liked being around cars, but something was still missing. He didn't just want to clean them. He wanted to work on them.

After taking a deeper look at his interests, preferences, and goals, Adrian and his support team got to work developing opportunities for him to try something new.

Thanks to the openness of the crew at One Stop Automotive and the diligence of his support team, Adrian finally got that chance through a Paid Internship.

Adrian showed up ready to work with a smile stretching from ear to ear.
He worked and learned alongside the crew.

He got his hands dirty, joked and laughed with the guys, and became part of the shop. He would come home covered in grime, with his big pearly white teeth shining through the grease on his cheeks.

He was exactly where he wanted to be.

This August marked the final month of Adrian's paid internship. After successfully completing a full year at One Stop Automotive, I am proud to say that Adrian has reached an incredible milestone:

He was officially hired as an employee.

Adrian’s experience can teach us that we don't always need to settle for something "realistic." Sometimes we just need a little help and the right opportunity.

Adrian dreamed of working on cars like his dad.

Now he does.

And it's truly a dream come true.
