Like this page and find out what it takes to become a member and get notified when we have extra produce for sale! We are community supported agriculture or CSA for short. CSA is a new idea in farming, one that has been gaining momentum since its introduction to the United States from Europe in the mid-1980s. The CSA concept originated in the 1960s in Switzerland and Japan, where consumers interes

ted in safe food and farmers seeking stable markets for their crops joined together in economic partnerships. We allow members to sign up at the beginning of the season. Once signed up, members work to grow and harvest the produce. Each week, members will get their "share" of the produce. If you're interested in becoming a member, there is more information available on our website (www.mitzelfarmsgardens.com) We will continue posting new information about what our members are busy doing and we will post all of our extra food that will be for sale on our wall. We hope that you soon can be added to our list of members! Thanks for checking us out!

Finally, full time gardening is my job. I retired from teaching last May, got a winter of rest and now the greenhouse and gardens are my daily work. Organic gardening and growing healthy, pesticide and herbicide free vegetables and fruits for people are my passion and my calling.

Wow, it sure has been a long time since we have posted anything on facebook! Anyway, here is the progress from the last two weeks at the gardens!

First, we had lots of fun during week one since it was Pesto Week. We stayed very busy weeding and preparing for harvest. We harvested green and red romaine lettuce, tomatoes, onions (red onions and Dakota Tears white onions), basil, beets, zucchini, and garlic. All of these ingredients worked great for the pesto recipe that we put on the website. If you ever have a chance, try it out! Pesto is a delicious sauce that can be used for several food dishes including pizza and pastas. The workers had lots of fun weeding and harvesting and trying out the pesto recipe!

The second week was full of growth. The cucumber/melon tunnel has turned into a complete jungle! It is full of cucumbers and melons that are growing like crazy! Within a few weeks, there should be several melons and cucumbers given each week for all of the shares. Also, the peppers have made tremendous progress. There are several bell peppers and jalapenos that will be ready for next week's shares. Finally, the tomato tunnel has been growing immensely and there are several red, ripe tomatoes that have been given in the shares already and will be given for the next few weeks.

Along with our facebook account, we also have a website for the gardens and we have posted some incredible pesto recipes so go to www.mitzelfamsgardens.com and learn more about the opportunities that a CSA member has and try out our all new recipes!

Thanks again for checking out our page and have a wonderful week!

Week six is now complete at Mitzel Farms Gardens. The things that are noticeable this week at the gardens are the carrots, the snow peas, the tomatoes, and the zucchini plants. The carrots are sprouting up and are noticeably growing larger. Soon there will be hundreds ready to be harvested. The snow peas are growing uncontrollably and beginning to climb up the netting. The tomatoes are multiplying and have been turning red. Most of the plants are in between the stages of turning green and red and are an orange color. The zucchini plants have made tremendous progress. The plants themselves are very large. No zucchinis have grown, but they will within the next two weeks. The pictures posted in our newest album are pictures of the things I just explained. Wow, it's been a very progressive two weeks in the gardens! First, the tomatoes are still off to a slow start, but will be ripening in the next two weeks. Also, several of the plants planted at the beginning of June are looking great! (Carrots, zucchini, broccoli, peas, beans: just to name a few) Included in this week's share is the (almost) last of the bok choy and some other lettuces like kale and chard. Don't forget that this week are some newly red strawberries included in the shares! They are absolutely delicious! Well, other than the marvelous growing progress in the pictures below, I believe that's about it. Thanks for checking out our facebook and for more information on Mitzel Farms Gardens check out our website at www.mitzelfarmsgardens.com
