It’s a sad fact that most roosters that are hatched do not make it long in this world simply because they are born male. I have taken in a rooster that was originally abandoned at a park and found by a friend of ours. It’s a cruel and inhumane thing to do to any chicken or any animal in general because they do not stand a chance against natural predators. They will be eaten by something. There are a ton of rooster sanctuaries for those who 100% are unable to have a rooster. Please utilize them to give them a chance to a loving home.
I have a couple roosters that have tried to flog me but instead of taking extreme actions like a lot of chicken owners do, I realized it’s what rooster’s are supposed to do to protect their hens from predators. I’ve worked with our roosters since then and they don’t do it anymore towards me. I rather do that than to get rid of a roo that will stand it’s ground and protect the flock. And they have when a raccoon managed to squeeze through a tiny hole into their coop. I found the raccoon scared & cornered by my 3 giant roosters. Had they not been in there, my flock would have been killed. Roosters are unappreciated but they do so much and keep our flocks safe & complete!
Each Spring millions of roosters are dumped at parks, thrown out of cars, locked out of their coops and beheaded. All because of their natural instincts. It is a tale as old as time. Your sweet and cuddly boy suddenly lunges at you with his feet, nipping and flapping his wings. He begins to chase you off and scare you. At between 6-9 months old cockerel's are flooded with a surge of hormones activating their primal instincts. Which is to protect their hens by any means necessary including death. It is incredibly frustrating and confusing if you don't know how to begin to adjust this behavior. This aggressive stage is usually just a phase and calms down after their first year. Training and patience are key, and affection and attention are the best cures for naughty boys. Aggression breeds aggression. Kicking, swatting and hitting will only make things worse. Having a rooster around is beneficial to your flock. Your hens will be protected and your heart will be full. Please give them a chance, they are worth it!❤
