Today one of my favorite employees retired from Publix Super Markets Super Markets after 45 years of service.
Several years ago, I became friends with Arthur one evening while trying to decide on a cut of steak. I had been perusing the meat selection for several minutes when he approached me, offering to help. I had (our) My Family’s Seasonings in my basket, and explained that I wanted a nice juicy steak to cook for dinner. (I always buy our products when I am at Publix and give them away to employees or customers.) I began to share our story, how we are local manufactures here in Tampa, and where we are sold in the store.
Turns out, not only was Arthur aware of our products, but knew how amazing our Prime Rib Seasoning was for the holidays (his words, I swear!).
Over the years, I enjoyed our grocery store chats when I popped into the store, which admittedly, was more frequent than most shoppers. We actually got to know each other. He met my kids; I met his grandson. He would tell me about his family, his barbecue cookouts, and of course his looming retirement.
Well, today was the day, and I wanted to be there to give him a going away gift basket and a hug. It was important to me to let him know how much I valued him; not just as a Publix employee, but as human being.
Soon, Arthur will be taking a cruise with his wife to celebrate his 45-year journey with Publix, and I wish him nothing but happiness for this next chapter of his life.
What a difference it makes when a grocery retailer empowers their employees to build relationships with their customers.
The Publix philosophy rings true: Publix, where shopping is a pleasure.
