A lot goes into these little dude’s.
You give them the best food, fresh water every day, do there house cleaning, keep them as cool as possible with fans, and protect them from predators and all they want to do is sharpen their spurs and use them on you. This little Seabright is losing his knives once it gets dark and cools off out here. Everybody seems to look a little rough due to them molting.

It would appear that my wife is not the only one taking care of some baby squirrels right now. Looks like Squirrley is on her second litter. I noticed there’s some marks under her armpits. It’s hard to tell if it’s botfly larvae or sores caused by nursing babies. I’ll have to keep an eye on her. Whether it’s nursing marks or botfly larva, both should run its course in a few weeks and heal.

Sometimes when you love something, you just have to let it go. Well, that doesn’t exactly have anything to do with this post, but…
about 18 years ago, this thing was almost dead in a pot so I dumped it in the woods. Now it’s taking over the woods. Go figure.

Update on the glorified tree rats.
About 3.5 weeks of age now and doing well.
One was really weak at the beginning. Unfortunately that little one didn’t make it.
The 3 remaining are getting stronger, growing hair, AND TEETH. Let’s hope they make it through the next 10 weeks to a good release back to the wild. We have become pros at this. Definitely a squirrel haven here. For both the grey and flying types.

Just a shout out!
My wife Kim started in 4H at age 11 (1997). Her mother Sandy started as the leader of Lake Equestrian 4H group at that time. At age 19 Kim became a volunteer co-leader of the group. Our Daughters Leah and Rylie started their journey at age 5 and now are 14 and almost 16. Sandy’s been keeping up this whole time. I see this in several of the families we associate with throughout 4H. If you talk to Sandy in the bleachers you will hear all about her ailments. If you see Sandy behind the scenes you will see her non stop from point A to point B and back again carrying or dragging something , stopping only for a moment to remember what direction she was supposed to be going. She is one of a few 4H grandma’s of the year we know of.

Getting ready to show! Always happy regardless the outcome. Win or lose they know they are fortunate to grow up with horses. Learning so much about life in a way many others don’t get too. Learning responsibility, learning leadership skills, and building great relationships with like minded people that hopefully stand the test of time.
If your a young family starting out and want a way to help build good character in your children, look into your local county’s 4H
programs.
