Rachel, Monica & Phoebe sure know how to work the camera. How photogenic are these sweet ladies?! They were really skittish when we first got them but now they’re getting used to us and so we can get within arms length of them before they run off. I’d say they are settling in nicely and are enjoying all the spoils one gets when they are a farm animal here at Bedgood Heritage Farm. Their moo’ing is pretty cute too and they often times belt it out in unison.

We took a drive today to see what was left of all the fall leaves. We were pleasantly surprised at the amount of colour there still was. The weather wasn’t the greatest and just as we were getting started the rain came pouring down and put an abrupt end to our afternoon of scenic driving. After 6 weeks of no rain we really needed it so it was a very welcomed interruption.

Every animal has its purpose on our farm. Our Livestock Guardian Dog, the Central Asian Shepherd, is a breed bred for over 5 thousand years mostly through natural selection in our case. You all have seen Kaya, Kaan, and Akasha. They are outside full time running the property with the livestock. Pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, guineas, and rabbits. They keep everyone safe including our house. (With a little help from Cutty). They deter and protect against wildlife predators without us having to waste our bullets shooting and killing the predators. We are able to not only protect our farm but also protect our resources and wildlife. Working in tandem with nature. We hope to have some exciting news in the next couple of months!

Weekly farm update:
- We got some rain. Finally!
- The front pasture is becoming very overgrazed so, to give it a break, we’ve put all the sheep & goats in the back pasture full time. They don’t seem too impressed (yet!) but soon they’ll discover that the grass really is greener on the other side….
- Our 8 little ducklings are growing up and is Freya’s latest obsession. She could just stare at them for hours. They’re currently staying in our carport until they get feathers and then they’ll go out back.
- Our mama hen and her babies have been released from their mini coop and are having a field day munching on bugs out in the food forest. Freya is obsessed with them too.
- We have a new farm addition : A rat snake who has made his home in the chicken coop. I discovered him on accident when I stuck my hand in one of the nest boxes and felt something that was not an egg. I’ve named her Phyllis to make her seem less scary.
- We’ve started to stain our front fence & it’s looking so much better. Another day and we should be done.
- We had our friend Kevin come and clear a bunch of trees that have fallen over the course gear. He also burnt a huge pile of brush that had been accumulating for months.
- We’ve started clearing up the barn. We’ve donated a bunch of unused cages, burnt unusable wood, and done a general tidy up.
- Today we pulled the trigger on brand new windows for the entire house. The current windows were all single pane glass and so were not great in the winter at all. Going to look amazing.
- Not much other activity to report this week. It’s been spent sleeping mostly & trying to recover from COVID. It clobbered both of us. We’re finally on the mend though.

Have a great week ahead everyone :)

Kaan is so good with his goats. The bond he has with them now is stronger than ever. No matter where they go on the property, he follows behind them & keeps a watchful eye as they graze the pasture. Now if only Akasha would do the same thing with the sheep. She currently still finds pleasure in chasing them rather than protecting them 🤣

The long overdue staining the fence project has finally commenced. To be fair I’ve had good intentions to get started on this for quite a few weekends now but each time the rain has had other plans in mind. I’m only 8 panels in and wow, what a transformation already! It is taking slightly longer than I anticipated and I am going to need a whole lot more stain than I thought. I had a good podcast going so the time went by quite quickly. Thankfully the brunt of the painting I did today was under the shade of our trees. If I keep doing 3-4 panels a day I should be done by next weekend.

“My purchase of a well bred purebred dog does not condemn another dog to death.
My purchase of a well bred purebred dog does not result in an uptick in the shelter dogs.
My desire to have a dog with predictable temperament from a healthy line does not result in another dog not getting adopted at the shelter.
My careful research on the most responsible breeders who meet all requirements is not the problem. It's not what you should be mad at.
It's not who you should blame.
I am not the one who irresponsibly brought these dogs into this world and left them in a shelter. Responsible breeders aren't the ones bringing these dogs to animal shelters either.
It's my home, my life and my choice what kind of dog I want to bring in. Maybe I need a working dog, sport dog, show dog or just a companion dog of a certain breed that suits me best.
Whatever reason I choose to support a reputable breeder, it will not send another dog to death.
A breeder who does health tests, temperament tests and titling of their dogs does not contribute to the number of stray dogs.
The number of stray dogs in the world is a problem, but it's not a problem made worse by reputable breeders or those who buy from them.
Your neighbor who gets a "purebred" dog without papers because they're cheap is contributing to the problem.
Your friend who spontaneously bought a puppy from Petland is contributing to the problem.
The person scrambling to pump out the hottest designer mix ASAP is contributing to the problem.
Your relatives who have to get their dog covered once, "so she can experience what it's like to be a mother" or because "she's such a good/cute/sweet girl" are contributing to the problem.
Your old school mate who bought a working dog with lots of energy without taking the time to research its needs and character who ultimately sees it doesn't fit his lifestyle is the problem.
A reputable breeder offers lifetime support. A serious breeder would never allow their dogs to end up in a shelter from the start.
It's understandable to be angry about the number of homeless dogs in the world, but if you look closer, you'll find that your anger is misplaced.”

Post was stolen from a friend. My dog is a Central Asian Shepherd. We have 3. Bred for over 5 thousand years by natural selection as they lived alongside nomadic shepherds and keepers of livestock. Bred to protect their flocks, herds, owners, and their property. Only the strongest, smartest, most intuitive dogs bred. One of the ancient giant breeds that lives 12-15 years and rarely has health issues. Ours live outside 24 hours a day and 365 days a year with their stock. They are bred for purpose and fulfill that purpose every day of their life.

Today was a productive day. The coop & breeder pens got a much needed, long overdue clean up. We transferred the new guineas to the separate coop and built them their own roost. They’re so much happier now. We washed all of the dogs, then watered all the plants and then ended the day walking the pasture to check on all the sheep & goats. Hope everyone has had a great weekend.

Today was meant to be a productive day of staining the front fencing but Mother Nature thought otherwise. After the afternoon chores I took a walk about the property to check on everyone and everything. One of our broody hens has had some chicks hatch and she is most pleased about it. I could only see 1 but I think there are a few more underneath her. Some of the veggies in our food forest are getting ready for the picking. All my watering & monitoring is paying off. The most entertaining part of the day was watching the dogs attempt to catch a mouse. They were not successful but I will give them an A for effort.

If you want to see how much patience you really do have then build yourself a nest box. Lots of various screws and extremely vague instructions. I never shy away from a challenge though so here is the end result. We are going to have some happy chickens tomorrow who will hopefully stop laying eggs all over the place now.

With the next feast just 10 days away, our farmers and chefs in Atlanta are in full preparation mode. 🔥 Chef Cam Floyd recently made a visit to Bedgood Heritage Farm - The Natural Way:

“I took our culinary team to process the lamb and it genuinely just made this event even more surreal for all of us. All three farms that I am working with were there along with my culinary team, and my young farmers and ranchers team.

It was definitely an experience they’ll never forget and I’m honored to be the one to give these lambs what they deserve by serving them at your event.“

Once upon a time a long, long time ago we used to raise & breed meat rabbits (Californians & NZW & crossbreeds)

We stopped, and got into goats. Well I got to thinking and decided to get back into raising them…

Will helped name them…. we have Sky (blue doe), Hershey (chocolate buck), and Starry Night (Black doe)
