Chives are secretly one of the most beautiful plants we grow. We didn't let our main crop go to flower this spring but this little volunteer plant is bringing some serious cheer to our rows of cabbage right now! Thanks for the mood-booster, nature. 💜
Joy is a high tunnel full of happy growing tomato plants! We've had a bit of a wild spring with some of our crops so it's a relief to have our tomato tunnels on track and looking good. Let the countdown to summer food begin! 🍅

If there was an award for getting the most years of use from a line of drip tape, we'd be the champions. 😆 In this photo Nar is stretching out lines to bring water to our brassicas. We spend a decent amount of time repairing the tape each year but it's worth it to reduce waste as much as possible!

Mycohouse got a visit from a film crew from Japan’s NHK doing a series on microbes. The interior of mycohouse was grown from microbes that biocycled demolition waste into new materials.

The frost missed us last night and we're basking in a beautiful sunny Friday here at the farm.☀️🌷A quick reminder that we still have flower CSA shares available for this summer from our partner emily pek | she/her]- you can purchase one in our online store at the link in our bio. The crew is happy for any day it doesn't rain as we focus on getting seedlings into the ground this time of year. Here Aline is transplanting beets, which can be direct-sown but get a little head start for us in these plug trays in the greenhouse. We also spent an afternoon earlier this week repairing one of our larger high tunnels, replacing the side walls before it gets planted with cucumbers.
Farming is a constant exercise in overcoming setbacks, changing plans, and readjusting expectations. Our greenhouse vents accidentally got closed during Saturday's heat wave and temps spiked high enough to completely bake a good number of our seedlings. Some will pull through but many will have to be replanted. Luckily was able to rush ship an order for us and we'll get back on track as soon as we can. 🌱
Happy Earth Day from all of us! 🌎 How lucky we are to live on a planet that offers so much beauty and abundance--let's take good care of her. 💚 At Ohio City Farm we're spending today transplanting baby greens and onions, and looking forward to the beautiful weather forecasted for the weekend.
We love cucumbers and grow several successions of them each season in our unheated high tunnels. This first crop will be planted out into our high tunnels before the last frost date (see second photo) to hopefully have ready for CSA shares in June! If you're starting cucumbers from seed to plant at home in the garden, you can sow them now and keep them under grow lights until the weather has warmed for transplanting them out in mid May. It's a snow day here in Cleveland! ❄️ Some of our cold-hardy crops are already outside and won't mind this brief freeze, but the rest are staying on the warm side of this greenhouse door for just a bit longer. 🌱
Double decker greenhouse table season means salads are on the way, and we can't wait. Our lettuce is always a customer favorite and it's easy to see why--grocery store lettuce harvested a week ago and transported across the country to sit on a shelf has lost its flavor by the time it lands on your table. Meanwhile, OCF lettuce is harvested fresh for you just steps from our farm stand!

Spring is: a lot of trips back and forth from the greenhouse. So glad to be getting these cabbage transplants into the dirt this week!

Bed prep is in full swing this time of year, any day that it's dry enough to be in the fields. We grow in these permanent beds that run the width of the farm and cultivate them mostly by hand with the occasional help of a BCS walk-behind tractor. When it's time to plant a new crop the beds are weeded, raked and re-shaped, with compost and other amendments added based on the results of our annual soil tests.
☀️Farm partner spotlight: Emily Pek of grows over 100 varieties of flowers on her farm east of Cleveland and for the second year is offering bouquet subscriptions through the CSA program. 💐Her flowers are grown without the pesticides and preservatives common in commercially available cut flowers, and are harvested fresh just before you pick them up.
🏡The mission of and Ohio City Farm is special to Emily because her grandparents fled Hungary for the U.S. during World War II. After settling in Cleveland they were married at St. Emeric's church, just across the street from our farm!
🌻When you purchase a flower CSA share you will receive 12 weekly bouquets from July 15-October 1, to be collected at Ohio City Farm on Friday evening or Saturday morning. Just discovered that yesterday was International Carrot Day and that's the kind of holiday we can't pass up a chance to celebrate! 🥕Carrots, we love you. You take up bed space for 100 days between sowing and harvesting but you're totally worth it. 👨🌾

We're having a wild ride with the weather today, warm and sunny followed by driving rain then sun again then back to rain. And high winds off the lake through all of the above! But the pea fencing is UP thanks to some great teamwork, and we're glad that at least it's not snowing (yet). 🌱
We're cleaning out the high tunnels and preparing beds for a new season of plantings. We typically grow all of our tomatoes and cucumbers in these structures, as early season solar warming from the plastic cover provides just the kind of cozy environment those heat-loving crops thrive in.

The weather rollercoaster we call March is almost over, and we've had some new followers join us lately--here is a quick introduction to say hello on this cold Tuesday!
Our farm is located in the heart of Cleveland, Ohio where we grow organic produce on nearly 6 acres. We sell most of what we grow through our Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm share program, which has just 2 summer memberships still available on our website (link in our bio). We also sell produce at our on-site farm stand on Saturdays in June-November and to many local chefs and restaurants throughout the year. Our farm-to-community donation program accepts monetary contributions which we use to grow and distribute vegetables to community members in need through local partner organizations.
Ohio City Farm is operated by , a non-profit which works to support and empower resettled individuals and families through mentoring, education, employment and more. The farm's growing season provides full time work for 6 staff members (all former refugees who now call Cleveland home) and 2 part time support staff. Before the rain, checking up on this year's garlic crop. Always the first harbinger of spring on the farm, garlic is planted each fall before the ground freezes and is already reaching skyward by the time warm days arrive. We anticipate this being the last season we will occupy this section of the farm before it becomes part of the new park, so we're maximizing its use for the first half of 2022. 🧄🌱
What's on your grocery list this week? When you join a CSA program, the shopping list gets so much shorter! Each week's farm share includes a wide variety of vegetables and herbs based on what's in season, so you can leave the produce department to us. Early summer and fall? Expect lush salad greens, crisp radishes, and tender herbs. Mid summer? Juicy tomatoes, colorful peppers, and hearty carrots are on the list.

Happy Spring! Right on schedule, our greenhouse is almost completely full of seed starting trays. Many of your favorite veggies need a longer growing season than our Cleveland climate can provide, so we give them a head start indoors before transplanting them outside once the warm weather is here to stay. Other crops do just fine if planted outdoors as seeds, but we start them in the greenhouse in order to have them ready for our CSA and farm stand in June.

We've received a lot of messages about our CSA farm shares lately and are SO CLOSE to selling out so here's one more post with the scoop you need to know so you don't miss out. Pictured here is a Whole Share, our standard share size which offers the most variety through the season. A CSA membership includes 20 weekly boxes of fresh produce grown using organic methods right here in Ohio City. If you enjoy eating a wide range of veggies at home, a CSA is for you. If the Whole Share feels too big for you we'd highly recommend finding a friend/neighbor/coworker to sign up with you! Members do this every year and either take turns picking up the share each week (our veggies are so fresh that they will easily last 2 weeks in the fridge) or split the contents of each box.
Our smaller share size has sold out and gone to a waiting list for this year, but Whole Shares are still available at both pick up locations (only 1 spot left in Shaker Heights as of this posting!) 🌸Flower bouquet shares are also available for either pick up location (and you don't have to have a veggie share to buy a flower share).
